Plug & Pylon is a guide to home EV charging for people buying their first charger. Not their third. Not for someone who already knows what a NEMA 14-50 is and wants a spec comparison.
Why this site exists
Look up almost any home charging question and you will get an answer containing four terms you would also have to look up. "For a 48A EVSE you'll need a 60A circuit and 6 AWG THHN, and check your onboard charger's AC acceptance rate." Every word of that is true and none of it helps someone who bought an EV last week.
That gap is the whole reason for this site. The technical content here is not simplified -- the arithmetic is shown in full and the sizing tables are complete -- but nothing is assumed. When a technical term appears for the first time on a page, it gets defined in the same sentence, and there is a glossary for anything we missed.
What we will not do
- Claim we tested things we did not test. We have not tested any charger on this site. We say so on every page, and how we pick sets out what we do instead.
- Print a number we cannot source. Every specification traces to a manufacturer's published document. Every cost range traces to a named published source with the date we fetched it. Where a figure genuinely is not available, we write that rather than filling the space.
- Publish fabricated reviews or ratings. There are no testimonials on this site, no star ratings for Plug & Pylon itself, and no invented review counts. There never will be.
- Pretend prices are live when they are not. We do not run a price feed, so buy buttons say "Check price" and send you to Amazon. A stale number dressed up as a current one is worse than no number.
- Recommend something because it pays more. We have joined one affiliate program, Amazon's, so there is not even a competing rate to be tempted by. Full disclosure.
- Talk you into buying. Several pages here end by recommending you spend nothing. That earns us zero and it is frequently the right answer.
Who it is for
Someone who has just bought or is about to buy an electric car, has a driveway or a garage, and is trying to work out what to do about charging. If that is you, start here.
It is also for people who cannot install a charger -- renters, apartment dwellers, people who move often. That is a genuinely harder problem and almost nobody writes about it honestly. Portable and travel charging is the section for you.
