NACS home charging, explained without the hype
The industry is moving to Tesla's connector. Here is what that actually changes about the charger you buy this month, which is less than you would think.

NACS -- the North American Charging Standard, formally SAE J3400 -- is the connector Tesla developed and has since opened up. Published lists confirm that by mid-2026 essentially every major automaker selling EVs in the US had signed agreements to adopt it.
That is a genuine industry shift, and it has generated a lot of anxiety about buying the wrong charger. The anxiety is mostly misplaced, for one simple reason.
Which cars have native NACS ports
Published lists as of 2026 name, among others:
- Tesla -- the whole range, always.
- Hyundai -- 2025 and later Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6, and the 2026 Ioniq 9.
- Kia -- the 2025 EV6, and the 2026 EV9 (Kia skipped native NACS on the 2025 EV9).
- Rivian -- refreshed 2026 R1T and R1S.
- GM -- the Cadillac Optiq and Optiq-V named as GM's first native-NACS models.
Adoption is rolling out model by model, so this list changes. Check your own car's charge port -- it is the only authoritative answer for your vehicle, and it takes two minutes.
What this means for buying a home charger

The part that actually changes
Public DC fast charging. A native NACS port means plugging into a Supercharger without an adapter, which is a real convenience on road trips. That is the substance of the transition -- and it has nothing to do with which charger you mount on your garage wall.

1. A two-car, two-connector garage

2. Tesla owners
Tesla Wall Connector (Gen 3)

48 A, a 24 ft cable and a four-year warranty, the longest in this group. The catch is the connector: Gen 3 is NACS, so a J1772 car needs an adapter.
What is good
- Four-year warranty, longer than the three-year standard here
- Up to six units can share one circuit for a two-EV household
- Wi-Fi with over-the-air firmware updates
- Scheduled departure and charge stats live in the Tesla app
What is not
- NACS connector, so a J1772 car needs an adapter on every charge
- Hardwired only

3. A first charger, hardwired
Emporia Level 2 EV Charger (Classic)

The safe default for a first home charger: 48 amps hardwired, a genuinely long cable, a NEMA 4 outdoor-rated case, and no subscription attached to the app.
What is good
- 48 A hardwired is the fastest tier most homes can realistically support
- 24 ft of cable reaches across a two-car garage without a fight
- NEMA Type 4 enclosure is rated for outdoor mounting
- Energy monitoring in the app with no subscription
What is not
- Drops to 40 A if you use the NEMA 14-50 plug rather than hardwiring
- The app is the only way to change the amperage setting
