The connector

Published lists put the refreshed 2026 R1T and R1S on a native NACS port. Earlier cars use the CCS standard, whose upper section is a J1772 inlet -- so a J1772 home charger plugs straight in. Cars sold with a NACS port ship with a J1772 adapter, so a J1772 charger remains the versatile choice either way. Go and look at your charge port rather than relying on a table.

Why battery size changes the amperage answer

Most of this site argues against overbuying amperage, because a typical car replaces a typical day's driving in an hour or two regardless. A large-battery truck or SUV is the honest exception.

Why a bigger battery wants more amps

A large pack, run from 20% to 80%, is a lot of energy to move -- often 70 kWh or more.

At 32 A (7.7 kW): roughly 9 hours

At 48 A (11.5 kW): roughly 6 hours

The first fits an overnight window with nothing to spare. The second fits comfortably.

Add towing, which can cut efficiency dramatically, and the case for the 48-amp unit and its 60-amp circuit becomes straightforward rather than marginal. Confirm your panel can carry it -- breaker and wire size.
