How to choose an EV charger

If you have never bought one of these, start on this page. Three questions decide almost everything, and none of them require you to understand amperage first.

Every charger product page opens with numbers -- 48 amps, 11.5 kW, NEMA 4, OCPP -- and none of them help you decide anything. Here is the order that does.

Question 1: which connector does your car use?

Go and look at the charge port on your car. There are two possibilities for home charging in North America:

  • J1772 -- a round connector with five holes. Used by nearly every non-Tesla EV. If your car has a CCS port (that same shape with two big round pins beneath it), the top part is J1772 and a J1772 charger plugs into it.
  • NACS -- a smaller, sleeker connector. Tesla's, and increasingly other manufacturers'.

Buy the one that matches. If your household has one of each, buy J1772 and use the adapter that came with the NACS car. Plug types explained has the full picture.

Question 2: what can your electrical panel spare?

This is the question that decides both your charger and most of your budget, and it is the one people leave until last.

Open your electrical panel door. The big breaker at the top says 100, 150 or 200 -- that is your home's total electrical service. Count the empty slots too; a charger needs two adjacent ones.

General expectations, not a determination. An electrician performs a load calculation to know for certain.

Question 3: how long is the cable run?

Park the car the way you normally park it. Find the charge port. Run a tape from where the charger will go, down the wall, across the floor, to the port. Add three feet. That is your minimum cable length.

Home chargers run about 16 to 25 feet. This is the one specification you cannot change after installation, so do the measurement -- the method.

The one thing that is not a preference

The charger must be properly safety certified. Look for UL listed, ETL listed, or tested to UL standards by CSA. Not "UL certified components". Not "meets UL standards". This is a device that draws 40 amps continuously for hours in your garage, and many inspectors will reject an unlisted unit outright. Safety certifications.

What you can ignore

Apps and Wi-Fi (your car probably already schedules charging), peak kW claims above 12 kW (home circuits do not go there), brand prestige, and anything about charging networks (that is public charging, unrelated). Smart chargers makes the case honestly either way.

1. A first charger, hardwired

2. Homes with an uncertain panel

The most adjustable unit here. It can be set anywhere from 16 A to 50 A, which makes it the one to buy when you do not yet know what your panel will allow.

  • Six selectable amperage settings from 16 A to 50 A

  • Rated for indoor or outdoor installation
  • The app is mature and does not require a subscription

What is not

  • 23 ft is a foot shorter than the longest cables in this group
  • The 50 A setting needs a bigger circuit than most panels have spare

3. Harsh weather and no app

Grizzl-E Classic

A cast-aluminum box with no app, no account and no firmware to update. If you want a charger that behaves like an appliance, this is the one.

What is good

  • Cast aluminum NEMA 4 / IP67 enclosure, built for outdoor mounting

  • Amperage is set with physical switches, not software
  • Protections for over-current, over-voltage, ground fault and over-temperature

What is not

  • 40 A ceiling, slower than the 48 A units if your panel can take more
  • No scheduling, so off-peak charging has to be set in the car
  • The cold-flexible 24 ft cable is only on the Extreme Edition

Questions people actually ask

How do I choose a home EV charger?
Match your car's connector, find out what your electrical panel can spare, and measure the cable run you need. Then confirm the unit carries a real safety listing. Everything else is preference.
What is the most important thing to get right?
The safety listing, because it is the one thing with no acceptable trade-off. After that, cable length -- it is the only spec you cannot change after installation.
What if I do not know what my panel can handle?

Do I need to understand amps and kilowatts to buy one?
