If your charger will be exposed to weather, the enclosure rating is not a nice-to-have spec, it is the spec. Every unit on this page carries a published rating for outdoor use, and every one of them states what that rating is.

What the ratings mean
| Rating | What it certifies |
|---|---|
| NEMA Type 3R | Protection against rain, sleet and snow. The minimum you should accept outdoors. |
| NEMA Type 4 | Adds protection against windblown dust and hose-directed water. This is the common rating on good home chargers. |
| IP65 | Dust-tight and protected against water jets. |
| IP67 | Dust-tight and protected against temporary immersion. More than a wall unit normally needs, and reassuring anyway. |
The things people forget
- The connector when it is not plugged in. A holster that lets the connector hang face-up collects water. Most units include a holster; use it, and mount it so the connector points down.
- Cold makes cables stiff. A cable that coils easily at 70 F can be unmanageable at 0 F. Several manufacturers sell cold-weather cable versions specifically for this -- see cold weather charging.
- Sun degrades plastics. South-facing walls with no shade are hard on enclosures and cables over years. Mount under an eave if you have the choice.
- Outdoor installation costs more. Published figures put weatherproofing at roughly $200 to $1,000 above an indoor run. Budget it -- outdoor installation.
