The best home charger for a Tesla

Three legitimate routes, and the right one depends on whether a non-Tesla will ever plug into this charger.

Teslas use the NACS connector. Home AC charging at up to 48 amps is the same 11.5 kW regardless of which of the three routes below you take, so pick on flexibility rather than speed.

Route 1: the Tesla Wall Connector

The obvious answer if you drive a Tesla and nothing else will use this charger. Tesla publishes up to 48 A / 11.5 kW, a 24-foot cable, up to 44 miles of range per hour for its own vehicles, and a four-year warranty -- a year longer than most competitors. Power sharing across up to six units is genuinely useful for a two-Tesla household on a tight panel.

The limitation: the Gen 3 is NACS-only, so a J1772 car needs an adapter on the cable every time. Full specifications.

Route 2: the Universal Wall Connector

The same unit with a J1772 adapter built into the holster. It charges a Tesla natively and a J1772 car without anything loose to lose. Costs more; worth it if your household genuinely has both connectors, and worth it as insurance if you might not always drive a Tesla.

Route 3: a J1772 charger plus your Tesla's adapter

Every Tesla ships with a J1772 adapter. Buy a good J1772 wall unit -- the Emporia, say -- clip the adapter on the connector, and it charges your Tesla at the same 48 amps.

This is the most future-proof route and the one people overlook. It works with your Tesla today, with a non-Tesla later, and with a visitor's car. The cost is a small daily friction: the adapter lives on the cable end, and it is one more thing that can be misplaced.

How fast will it actually charge?

Your car's onboard charger sets the ceiling, and that varies by model and model year. Check the AC charging rate in your owner's manual -- we are not going to print a per-trim figure we cannot cite. Then run the numbers in the charging speed calculator.
