J1772 home charging: what it is and who needs it

The North American AC charging standard, still the most versatile connector to have on your wall even as cars move to NACS.

J1772 -- properly SAE J1772 -- is the AC charging connector nearly every non-Tesla EV sold in North America has used. It is the five-pin round connector on the end of most home charger cables, and it handles Level 1 and Level 2 AC charging.

Which cars use it

Broadly: every non-Tesla EV and plug-in hybrid sold in North America up to the NACS transition, plus every Tesla via the adapter that ships with the car.

Cars with a CCS Combo port also use J1772 for AC. CCS is a J1772 inlet with two extra DC pins beneath it -- so a J1772 home charger plugs into the top section and charges normally. That is why "my car has CCS" and "my car takes a J1772 charger" are both true.

Why J1772 is still the versatile choice

  1. It charges every car, one way or another. Teslas via the included adapter; NACS-port cars via the J1772 adapter they ship with; everything else natively.
  2. It survives a car change. A NACS-only charger is tied to a NACS car. A J1772 charger is not tied to anything.
  3. It is the widest product choice. Almost every home charger on the market is J1772, so you are choosing from the whole field rather than a corner of it.
  4. Visitors can charge. A guest with a different car plugs in, possibly with their own adapter.

What about the NACS transition?

Manufacturers are moving to NACS ports, which is genuinely happening and does not obsolete your J1772 charger. Cars sold with a NACS port ship with a J1772 adapter, precisely because so much existing AC infrastructure is J1772.

So the practical advice for someone buying a charger today is unchanged: buy J1772 unless you are certain every car that will ever use this charger is NACS. NACS vehicles covers the other side of the decision.

1. A first charger, hardwired

2. Homes with an uncertain panel

3. Harsh weather and no app

Grizzl-E Classic

4. Long reach outdoors

What is a J1772 connector?
The SAE J1772 connector is the North American AC charging standard -- the five-pin round connector on most home charger cables, used for Level 1 and Level 2 charging.
Which cars use J1772?
Essentially every non-Tesla EV and plug-in hybrid sold in North America, including cars with CCS ports (CCS uses a J1772 inlet for AC). Teslas use it via the included adapter.
