What EV charger installation actually costs

Published 2026 figures, itemized, with the arithmetic shown. The number that surprises people is not the charger.

Nearly every charger review skips this, which is odd, because it is the larger number. A $500 charger with a $1,700 installation is a $2,200 project, and the thing that moves that figure by thousands is not which charger you picked. It is your electrical panel.

A worked example

A typical suburban install

Charger, mid-range 48 A Wi-Fi unit: $475

Labor, panel in the garage, 15 ft run: $650

Permit: $150

Panel work: none needed (200 A service, four free slots)

Total: $1,275

That is the whole story of EV charger installation cost in two calculations. Everything else is detail.

This is arithmetic on published ranges, not a quote. It adds the figures you selected and nothing else. The only number that matters is the one an electrician writes down after looking at your panel, and that is worth getting from two or three of them.

How to make it cheaper, honestly

  1. Mount the charger as close to the panel as your cable will allow. Labor scales with the length and difficulty of the run more than anything else.
  2. Take less amperage. A 40 A charger on a 50 A circuit uses thinner, cheaper wire than a 48 A charger on a 60 A circuit, and it may fit a panel that the larger one would not. The speed difference is about six miles of range per hour.
  3. Use an existing 240 V outlet if you have one. A dryer or workshop socket within reach can remove the electrician entirely -- see hardwired vs plug-in.
  4. Get three quotes. The spread between electricians on the same job is routinely hundreds of dollars. Hiring an electrician lists what to ask so the quotes compare like for like.
  5. Check local rebates. The federal credit is gone but utility and state programs are not -- tax credits and rebates.

What not to economize on

The permit, and the safety listing on the charger. An unpermitted 240-volt circuit is a problem when you sell the house and potentially with your insurer if anything goes wrong. A charger without a recognized listing may fail inspection outright. Neither saving is worth what it risks.

1. Harsh weather and no app

Grizzl-E Classic

2. A first charger, hardwired

Emporia Level 2 EV Charger (Classic)

3. Homes with an uncertain panel

The most adjustable unit here. It can be set anywhere from 16 A to 50 A, which makes it the one to buy when you do not yet know what your panel will allow.

Questions people actually ask

How much does it cost to install an EV charger at home?
Published 2026 figures put a typical all-in project around $1,400 to $2,200, with a wide real range from roughly $400 of labor on a simple job to $10,000 or more where a service upgrade is required.
Why is EV charger installation so expensive?
Because you are adding a new high-amperage 240-volt circuit, which means running heavy conductors from your panel, a breaker, possibly conduit, and a permitted inspection. The charger is the smaller half of the bill.
Does installation cost more if my panel is full?
Considerably. A subpanel adds roughly $500 to $1,500 on published figures, and a 100 A to 200 A service upgrade adds roughly $1,500 to $4,000.
Can I reduce the cost by installing it myself?
You can plug a plug-in charger into an existing 240-volt outlet yourself. Creating the circuit is licensed electrical work in most jurisdictions, and doing it unpermitted creates problems at resale and with insurers.
Is there still a tax credit for home EV charger installation?
Not federally. The Section 30C residential credit expired on June 30, 2026. State, city and utility rebates may still be available where you live.
