The best home charger for a Nissan Leaf

The 2026 Leaf has two charge ports, and only one of them is for home charging. Plug into the wrong one and nothing happens -- here is which is which.

Two ports, two jobs

The 2026 Leaf drops the CHAdeMO fast-charging port older Leafs used and replaces it with NACS -- but only for DC fast charging. AC charging, which is everything you do at home, goes through a separate J1772 port on the other side of the car.

Why you should not buy a big charger

The 7.2 kW ceiling

7.2 kW / 240 V = 30 A of charging current

A 32 A charger (7.7 kW) already offers more than the car will take

A 48 A charger (11.5 kW) charges a 2026 Leaf at the same 7.2 kW

Charging always happens at the lower of the two figures

That makes the Leaf one of the clearest cases on this site for buying modestly. A 32 or 40-amp charger needs a 40 or 50-amp circuit rather than 60, which is thinner wire, a smaller breaker, and a far better chance your panel copes without a subpanel. How many amps do you need.

1. Harsh weather and no app

2. A first charger, hardwired

The safe default for a first home charger: 48 amps hardwired, a genuinely long cable, a NEMA 4 outdoor-rated case, and no subscription attached to the app.

3. Homes with an uncertain panel

The most adjustable unit here. It can be set anywhere from 16 A to 50 A, which makes it the one to buy when you do not yet know what your panel will allow.

What charger do I need for a Nissan Leaf?
A J1772 Level 2 charger, for every Leaf. On the 2026 model, home charging goes through the J1772 port; the NACS port is for DC fast charging only.
Why does the 2026 Nissan Leaf have two charging ports?
It uses J1772 for AC charging at home and public Level 2 stations, and NACS for DC fast charging, replacing the CHAdeMO port older Leafs used.
Can I use a Tesla Wall Connector with a 2026 Leaf?
Not through the Leaf's NACS port, which is DC only. It would need a NACS-to-J1772 adapter into the J1772 port.
How many amps should a Leaf charger be?
The 2026 Leaf's onboard charger is published at 7.2 kW, about 30 amps, so a 32-amp charger already covers it. A larger charger will not charge it faster.
