Do you need a Level 2 charger for a plug-in hybrid?

Usually not, and this is the clearest case on the whole site for recommending you buy nothing.

This is the page where we most often tell people not to spend money, so let us get to it: if you drive a plug-in hybrid, the cable that came with the car and a normal outlet will very likely cover you completely.

Why the math is different

Two things about PHEVs change the calculation, and they compound.

The battery is small. A PHEV carries enough for a modest electric-only range, then runs as a hybrid. There is simply much less energy to replace than in a full EV.

The onboard charger is often slow. Many PHEVs accept 3.3 kW or less on AC -- some considerably less. That is the ceiling: a 48-amp wall unit offering 11.5 kW will deliver 3.3 kW to a car that accepts 3.3 kW, at exactly the same speed as a normal outlet delivering 1.4 kW would take longer to do.

When a Level 2 charger does make sense for a PHEV

  • You do multiple electric-only round trips a day and want to refill between them. Midday top-ups are where Level 2 earns its place on a PHEV.
  • Your car accepts 6.6 kW or more, and you would actually use the speed.
  • A full EV is coming. Installing now for the next car is a legitimate reason -- just be clear that is what you are buying.
  • You cannot leave a cable to a standard outlet safely where you park.

What to do instead

  1. Use the included cable on a sound, dedicated outlet. Plugged in directly, never through an extension cord -- why.
  2. Plug in every time you park, not when the battery is low. On a small battery this is what keeps you in electric mode.
  3. If your utility has an off-peak rate, set the car to charge then. Most PHEVs can schedule it.
  4. Revisit the decision if you buy a full EV. Then do you need a Level 2 charger becomes a real question.
