The best home charger for a Chevrolet Equinox EV

A sensibly sized EV that a sensibly sized charger fills overnight with hours to spare. Here is the case for not overbuying.

The connector

GM has committed to NACS across its lineup, with published lists naming Cadillac's Optiq as the first native-NACS GM model. Timing varies by model, so look at the port on your car. A CCS-equipped Equinox takes a J1772 charger directly; a NACS-equipped one ships with a J1772 adapter.

How long it takes at home

Get two numbers from the car: its usable battery capacity and its AC charging rate, both in the owner's manual. Then the arithmetic is straightforward.

The method

Energy to replace = battery kWh x the percentage you are adding

Hours = that energy / the charger's kW (or the car's AC limit, whichever is lower)

A typical 40-mile day at 3.5 mi/kWh is about 11.4 kWh

At 32 A (7.7 kW) that is about 1 hour 30 minutes.

That last line is the whole argument. Unless you drive substantially more than average, a 32-amp charger finishes its work before midnight. Charging speed calculator.

Where the savings are

A 32-amp charger needs a 40-amp circuit; a 48-amp charger needs 60. That difference is thinner wire, a smaller breaker, and a much better chance your existing panel copes without a subpanel. On published figures a subpanel is $500 to $1,500 -- so the smaller charger can save more on the installation than it costs on the hardware.

1. Harsh weather and no app

Grizzl-E Classic

2. A first charger, hardwired

The safe default for a first home charger: 48 amps hardwired, a genuinely long cable, a NEMA 4 outdoor-rated case, and no subscription attached to the app.

3. Homes with an uncertain panel

The most adjustable unit here. It can be set anywhere from 16 A to 50 A, which makes it the one to buy when you do not yet know what your panel will allow.
