People compare these because both are popular and both are built to last, but they are built for different buyers. The Grizzl-E is for someone who wants an appliance: plug it in, set it once, never open an app. The Wall Connector is for a Tesla household that is hardwiring and wants Tesla's own hardware.

The differences that matter

  • Plug or hardwire. The Grizzl-E plugs into a NEMA 14-50 or 6-50 receptacle, so it can move house with you. The Wall Connector is hardwired. Hardwired vs plug-in.
  • 40 or 48 amps. A 40 A charger needs a 50 A circuit; 48 A needs 60 A. Many cars cap below either, so check yours before paying for the bigger circuit. How many amps you need.
  • App or no app. The Grizzl-E Classic has no app, no account and no firmware updates. If scheduling happens in your car anyway, that is a feature. Chargers without an app.
  • The connector. NACS on the Wall Connector, J1772 on the Grizzl-E. That alone decides it for many households.

1. Harsh weather and no app

Grizzl-E Classic

A cast-aluminum box with no app, no account and no firmware to update. If you want a charger that behaves like an appliance, this is the one.

What is good

  • Cast aluminum NEMA 4 / IP67 enclosure, built for outdoor mounting
  • No app, no account, no network dependency
  • Amperage is set with physical switches, not software
  • Protections for over-current, over-voltage, ground fault and over-temperature

What is not

  • 40 A ceiling, slower than the 48 A units if your panel can take more
  • No scheduling, so off-peak charging has to be set in the car
  • The cold-flexible 24 ft cable is only on the Extreme Edition

Tesla Wall Connector (Gen 3)

48 A, a 24 ft cable and a four-year warranty, the longest in this group. The catch is the connector: Gen 3 is NACS, so a J1772 car needs an adapter.

What is good

  • Four-year warranty, longer than the three-year standard here
  • Up to six units can share one circuit for a two-EV household
  • Wi-Fi with over-the-air firmware updates
  • Scheduled departure and charge stats live in the Tesla app

  • NACS connector, so a J1772 car needs an adapter on every charge
