The short version: buy this if you want a charger that will still work in ten years without an app store, an account or a company still being in business. It is 40 amps, it is in a cast-aluminum NEMA 4 / IP67 case, its amperage is set with physical switches, and it is UL certified.

The case for a charger with no software

Every connected device you own has a lifecycle problem: the app gets rewritten, the account system migrates, the cloud service is retired, the company is acquired. Most of the time that is a nuisance. On a device bolted to your house and wired into a 50-amp circuit, it is worth thinking about before you buy.

The Grizzl-E has none of that surface area. Its amperage is set once, by hand, at installation. There is nothing to update and nothing to log into. If your car already schedules its own charging -- and most do -- you lose almost nothing.

What 40 amps means in practice

The arithmetic

At 3.5 mi/kWh: about 34 miles of range added per hour

Over a 10-hour night: about 340 miles

Required circuit: 40 x 1.25 = 50 A

It is meaningfully slower than a 48-amp unit on paper -- about six miles per hour of charging -- and almost never slower in a way you would notice. The 50-amp circuit it needs is also easier for a tight panel to accommodate than a 60-amp one, which occasionally makes it the *cheaper* installation as well as the cheaper charger.

Built for weather

The cast-aluminum enclosure with a published NEMA 4 / IP67 rating is a genuine differentiator against plastic-bodied competitors, and it is why this unit shows up in our outdoor roundup and our cold-weather roundup. Who should not buy it

  • You want energy monitoring. There is no app, so there is no reporting. If you want to see what charging costs, buy the Emporia.
  • Your car cannot schedule its own charging and you are on a time-of-use rate. You would be giving up the savings.
  • You want 48 amps. This unit tops out at 40.
  • You want load management for a tight panel or two EVs. That needs a connected unit -- see load management.
