Lectron Level 1 & 2 Tesla charger review

One NACS portable for a standard outlet and a 14-50, with the current adjustable on both. Here is what Lectron publishes -- and the one figure on its page to ignore.

A Tesla driver who charges in more than one place usually needs two things: Level 2 at home and something that works from an ordinary outlet elsewhere. This unit is both. We have not tested one; figures come from Lectron's product page, linked at the foot of this page.

Level 1 and Level 2, honestly

Level 1 at 12 A: 12 x 120 = 1.44 kW, about 5 miles of range per hour

Level 2 at 16 A: 16 x 240 = 3.84 kW, about 13 miles per hour

Level 2 at 40 A: 40 x 240 = 9.6 kW, about 34 miles per hour

Who it suits

  • A Tesla driver who charges in several places -- a 14-50 at home, a standard outlet at a relative's. Dual-voltage portables.
  • A second charger for a Tesla household. The included wall mount makes it a tidy fixture beside a 14-50.

  • Adjustable current, so it can be turned down for a weaker circuit

What is not

  • NACS only -- a J1772 car needs an adapter
  • On 120 V it is still Level 1: about 5 miles of range per hour at best
  • 20 ft of cable, per Lectron's FAQ -- measure the run before relying on it

Yes. Switch to the NEMA 5-15 plug for Level 1 at 8 to 12 A -- about 5 miles of range an hour at 12 A.
