The best home charger for a Volvo EV
Volvo's EX90, EX40 and EC40 use CCS. Volvo sells a NACS-to-CCS adapter -- and includes one for new buyers -- for Supercharger access. At home, a J1772 charger plugs straight in.

The connector
The adapter Volvo sells and includes with new cars lets them use NACS fast chargers such as Tesla Superchargers. It exists because the cars themselves have CCS ports, whose AC section is J1772. That means any J1772 Level 2 charger connects directly at home.

Choosing the charger
Check the AC charging rate in your manual and match it. A three-row EX90 with a big battery makes a stronger case for 48 A than a compact EX40 does -- if your panel can carry a 60 A circuit. How many amps you need.

1. A first charger, hardwired

- Drops to 40 A if you use the NEMA 14-50 plug rather than hardwiring
