Can you install your own EV charger?
Partly. Here is exactly where the line sits, and why the part on the other side of it is not a good place to save money.

The green zone
- Plugging in a plug-in charger where a suitable 240-volt receptacle already exists on an adequate circuit.
- Choosing the mounting position and measuring the cable run.
- Buying the charger, checking it is properly listed, and reading its manual.
- Setting the amperage to match the circuit, at commissioning.
- Deciding the amperage tier you want, using how many amps do you need.
The red zone
- Adding a breaker to your panel. Panel bus bars remain live with the main breaker off unless the service is disconnected.
- Running new circuit conductors, sizing them, and terminating them.
- Installing a new receptacle on a new circuit.
- Any of it without a permit where one is required, which is nearly everywhere for a new 240 V circuit.
Why this particular job is unforgiving
An EV charger is not like adding a light. It draws 32 to 48 amps continuously for hours, night after night, for years. Two things follow:
- Termination quality matters enormously. A slightly loose terminal on a lamp circuit is nothing. On a 48-amp continuous load it heats, oxidizes, heats more, and eventually fails -- which is why torque specifications exist and why electricians own torque screwdrivers.
- Conductor sizing is not guesswork. It depends on the run length, insulation type, ambient temperature, conduit fill and terminal temperature ratings. Getting it wrong produces a circuit that works fine and runs hot for years. See breaker and wire size for what goes into it.
The non-safety reasons too
- Resale. Unpermitted electrical work is a standard finding in a home inspection and a standard negotiating point against you.
- Insurance. If an unpermitted circuit is implicated in a claim, expect questions.
- Warranty. Improper installation is a common exclusion in charger warranties -- see warranties compared.
- Rebates. Utility programs that fund charger installation generally require licensed work and a permit.

Can I install an EV charger myself?
You can plug a plug-in charger into an existing suitable 240-volt outlet, and you can choose the location and mount the bracket. Creating the circuit is licensed electrical work in most jurisdictions and normally requires a permit.
Do I need a permit to install an EV charger?
For a new 240-volt circuit, almost always. Simply plugging a charger into an existing outlet generally does not require one.
What happens if I install an EV charger without a permit?
It typically surfaces at resale as a home-inspection finding, it can complicate an insurance claim, and it can void the charger's warranty. Some utility rebate programs also require permitted, licensed work.
Is it dangerous to install an EV charger yourself?
The circuit work is. A charger is a 32 to 48-amp continuous load, and undersized conductors or loose terminations overheat over time rather than failing immediately -- which is what makes the error hard to spot.
