EV charger warranties, compared
We cannot tell you how these units hold up over ten years, because nobody has run them that long and we have not run them at all. The warranty is the part you can actually hold someone to.

Long-term reliability is the one thing published specifications cannot tell you, and it is precisely where sites that claim to have tested twenty chargers over three months are also telling you nothing -- three months is not long-term either.
So here is the honest substitute: the warranty. It is a written commitment from the manufacturer, it is published, and unlike a reliability impression it is enforceable.

Three years is effectively the industry norm. Tesla's four-year term on the Wall Connector is a genuine differentiator and one of the stronger reasons to choose it if you drive a Tesla -- see the Wall Connector page.
What warranties typically do not cover
Read your specific unit's warranty document, because these vary. Common exclusions across the category include:
- Improper installation. This is the big one. A charger wired by someone unqualified, on an undersized circuit, or without a required permit can void coverage entirely. It is also a reason to keep the permit and the inspection record.
- Damage from a power event -- surges, lightning, utility faults. Some manufacturers exclude these, some cover them.
- Cosmetic damage and normal wear, including cable abrasion.
- Removal and reinstallation labor. Many warranties cover the unit but not the electrician's time to swap it, which on a hardwired charger is not nothing.
- Commercial use, which can include a rental property depending on the wording -- worth checking if you are buying for a rental.
Why the warranty matters more on this product
A hardwired charger is not a device you return to a shelf. Replacing one means an electrician, possibly a permit, and a gap in your ability to charge at home. A longer warranty is buying down the cost of that specific inconvenience, which is why it deserves more weight here than on a typical appliance.

1. Tesla owners

48 A, a 24 ft cable and a four-year warranty, the longest in this group. The catch is the connector: Gen 3 is NACS, so a J1772 car needs an adapter.

- Wi-Fi with over-the-air firmware updates
- Scheduled departure and charge stats live in the Tesla app

2. A first charger, hardwired

The safe default for a first home charger: 48 amps hardwired, a genuinely long cable, a NEMA 4 outdoor-rated case, and no subscription attached to the app.

- NEMA Type 4 enclosure is rated for outdoor mounting
- Energy monitoring in the app with no subscription
What is not
- Drops to 40 A if you use the NEMA 14-50 plug rather than hardwiring
- The app is the only way to change the amperage setting

3. Harsh weather and no app

A cast-aluminum box with no app, no account and no firmware to update. If you want a charger that behaves like an appliance, this is the one.
What is good

- Protections for over-current, over-voltage, ground fault and over-temperature
What is not
- 40 A ceiling, slower than the 48 A units if your panel can take more
- No scheduling, so off-peak charging has to be set in the car
- The cold-flexible 24 ft cable is only on the Extreme Edition
