Let us clear this up first, because it is the single most common source of confusion for a first-time buyer: "240-volt charger" and "Level 2 charger" are the same thing. There is no separate category. If a product is sold as a Level 2 home charger, it runs on 240 volts.

So the real question is not which 240-volt charger to buy but which Level 2 charger to buy, and that comes down to three specs. This page answers it; charging levels explained covers the underlying idea if you want it first.

Why 240 volts changes everything

The arithmetic

Level 1, a normal outlet: 12 A x 120 V = 1.44 kW

Level 2 at 32 A: 32 x 240 = 7.7 kW -- more than five times as fast

Level 2 at 48 A: 48 x 240 = 11.5 kW -- eight times

Power is volts multiplied by amps. Double one and raise the other and the product climbs quickly.

In practical terms: about 5 miles of range per hour on 120 V, against 27 to 40 miles per hour on 240 V. That is the difference between a car that never quite catches up and one that is full every morning.

What a 240V circuit involves

A 240-volt circuit uses two hot conductors instead of one, which is why it needs a double-pole breaker taking two adjacent slots in your panel. You may already have one feeding a range, a dryer or a workshop outlet -- and if it is within reach of where you park, a plug-in charger may need no new wiring at all.

What is a 240V EV charger?
