The best 50-amp EV chargers

Fifty amps is one step above the 48-amp tier. Three chargers reach it, and all three need hardwiring and a 70-amp circuit to get there.

Most home chargers stop at 48 A, the figure that lands on a standard 60-amp breaker. These three go to 50 A, which moves the circuit up to 70 amps for under half a kilowatt more. That can be worth it -- but only for a car and a panel that can use it. The 48-amp picks.

The charger's installation manual states the circuit it needs, and governs. Breaker and wire size.

The two checks before you buy

  • Your car's onboard charger. If it accepts less than 12 kW, a 50 A unit charges no faster than a 48 A or 40 A one. The AC charging rate is in the owner's manual. Chargers for an electric truck covers the vehicles most likely to use it.
  • Your panel. A 70 A circuit needs real headroom after everything else in the house. Load calculation.

2. Long reach outdoors

Questions people actually ask

Is a 50 amp EV charger worth it?
Only if your car's onboard charger accepts about 12 kW and your panel can carry a 70 A circuit. Otherwise a 48 A or 40 A unit charges just as fast.
What breaker does a 50 amp EV charger need?
A 70 A circuit: 50 x 1.25 = 62.5 A, rounded up to the next standard breaker size. The installation manual governs.
Can a 50 amp EV charger plug into a NEMA 14-50?
It can be plugged in, but a 14-50 sits on a 50 A circuit, so the charger runs at no more than 40 A. The full 50 A needs hardwiring.
