48 amps is where home charging tops out in practice. It is the highest figure that lands neatly on a standard 60-amp breaker, which is why so many manufacturers stop exactly there rather than at 50.

What 48 amps actually delivers

The arithmetic

48 A x 240 V = 11,520 W = 11.5 kW

At 3.5 mi/kWh: about 40 miles of range added per hour

Over a 10-hour night: about 400 miles

Required circuit: 48 x 1.25 = 60 A

Four hundred miles overnight is more than almost anyone drives in three days. That is not an argument against the tier, but it is the reason to be honest about why you want it.

The two checks before you buy

Your panel. A 60-amp circuit needs 60 amps of headroom after everything else in the house. On a 200-amp service with gas heat that is usually fine; on a full 100-amp panel it frequently is not. Load calculation.

Your car. The onboard charger sets the ceiling. Many EVs accept 11.5 kW and plenty accept 7.7 kW. If yours is the latter, a 48-amp wall unit charges at exactly the same rate as a 32-amp one -- you are buying headroom for a future car, which is a legitimate reason as long as you know that is the purchase.

48 A, a 24 ft cable and a four-year warranty, the longest in this group. The catch is the connector: Gen 3 is NACS, so a J1772 car needs an adapter.

Questions people actually ask

Is a 48 amp EV charger worth it?
If you have a large battery, tow, share the charger between two EVs, or need charging finished inside a narrow off-peak window -- yes, provided your panel can carry a 60-amp circuit. For a single commuter car it is usually unnecessary.
What circuit does a 48 amp charger need?
A 60-amp circuit. The continuous-load rule sizes the branch circuit at 125% of the charger's draw: 48 x 1.25 = 60.
Can a 48 amp charger be plugged in?
No. A receptacle circuit limits a continuous load to 40 amps, so every 48-amp unit is hardwired.
Will my car actually use 48 amps?
Only if its onboard charger accepts 11.5 kW. Many EVs cap at 7.7 kW, in which case a 48-amp unit charges no faster than a 32-amp one. Check the AC charging rate in your owner's manual.
