The best EV chargers for hot climates

Cold gets all the attention, but sustained heat is harder on a charger that lives on a west-facing wall. Here is what to check and where to put it.

Cold-weather charging gets written about constantly and heat barely at all, which is odd given how many EVs live in Phoenix, Las Vegas and central Texas. Three separate things matter, and only one of them is the charger.

1. The charger's published ceiling

This is the specification to check, and many manufacturers simply do not publish it. Wallbox publishes -22 F to 104 F for the Pulsar Plus, which is a concrete number you can hold them to. Where a manufacturer publishes nothing, we are not going to invent a figure for them.

Note what an ambient rating does and does not cover: 104 F is air temperature in the shade, not the surface temperature of a black enclosure in direct afternoon sun, which is considerably higher.

2. Where you mount it

Shade is free and it is the single most effective thing you can do. In order of preference:

  1. Inside a garage, even an unconditioned one.
  2. Under an eave or overhang, out of direct sun.
  3. A north-facing wall, which never takes direct afternoon sun.
  4. A west-facing wall in full sun -- the worst case, and the one to design around.

Sun also degrades cable jackets and enclosure plastics over years. A cast-metal enclosure handles UV better than a plastic one, which is part of why the Grizzl-E shows up on this list as well as the cold-weather one.

3. Thermal derating, and why it is not a fault

A charger that reduces its output when it gets very hot is doing exactly what it should. So is a car that slows its own charging to protect the battery. If you see a lower charging rate on a 115 F afternoon, that is the protection working.

Why it rarely matters at home

You drove 40 miles: about 11.4 kWh to replace at 3.5 mi/kWh

At full 9.6 kW: about 1 hour 11 minutes

Derated to 6 kW: about 1 hour 54 minutes

You are plugged in for ten hours, and the coolest ones are overnight anyway.

1. Tight wall space

2. Harsh weather and no app

Grizzl-E Classic

A cast-aluminum box with no app, no account and no firmware to update. If you want a charger that behaves like an appliance, this is the one.

What is good

  • Cast aluminum NEMA 4 / IP67 enclosure, built for outdoor mounting
  • No app, no account, no network dependency
  • Amperage is set with physical switches, not software
  • Protections for over-current, over-voltage, ground fault and over-temperature

What is not

  • 40 A ceiling, slower than the 48 A units if your panel can take more
  • No scheduling, so off-peak charging has to be set in the car
  • The cold-flexible 24 ft cable is only on the Extreme Edition

3. Long reach outdoors

The 25 ft cable is the longest in this group, and the NEMA 4 case plus a cold-flexible cord make it the easiest unit to live with on an exposed outside wall.

  • NEMA Type 4 enclosure rated for rain, snow, hail and sleet
  • Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, so it still works if the Wi-Fi drops

FAQ

Questions people actually ask

Do EV chargers work in extreme heat?
Within their published operating range, yes. Wallbox publishes -22 F to 104 F for the Pulsar Plus, for example. Where a manufacturer publishes no upper limit, you are guessing.
Should I install an EV charger in direct sunlight?
Avoid it if you can. Shade is free and it is the most effective thing you can do -- inside a garage, under an eave, or on a north-facing wall.
Why is my EV charging slower in hot weather?
The charger, the car, or both may reduce output to protect themselves. That is designed behavior, not a fault, and overnight charging largely sidesteps it.
Does heat damage an EV charger?
Not within its published range. Sustained UV exposure does degrade cable jackets and enclosure plastics over years, which is a reason to prefer shade and a metal enclosure.
