Plug-in or hardwired decides it for many people

If you rent, might move, or already have a NEMA 14-50 in the garage, the Emporia's plug-in version is the whole argument -- the Pulsar Plus at 48 A needs an electrician and stays with the house. If you are hardwiring anyway, this difference vanishes. Hardwired vs plug-in.

Size decides it for everyone else

Under eight inches square and 4.4 pounds without the cable, the Pulsar Plus fits the narrow strip of wall between a door and the panel that a larger unit will not. If your wall is generous, you are paying for compactness you will not notice.

Solar, if you have it

Both can match charging to solar output, and both need an add-on to do it: Wallbox's solar charging -- 100% solar or a solar-grid mix -- works with a Wallbox Power Meter, and Emporia's surplus-solar charging works with its Vue energy monitor. Chargers for solar covers when that is worth setting up.

1. A first charger, hardwired

The safe default for a first home charger: 48 amps hardwired, a genuinely long cable, a NEMA 4 outdoor-rated case, and no subscription attached to the app.

The verdict

Emporia if you want the option to plug in, or you simply want the safe default at 48 A. Pulsar Plus if wall space is tight, or you like the finer 6-to-48 A adjustment for fitting a constrained circuit.

Is the Emporia or Wallbox Pulsar Plus better?
Emporia if you want a plug-in option; Pulsar Plus if you need the smallest 48 A body. Output, connector and warranty length are the same.
Can the Wallbox Pulsar Plus be plugged in?
Not at 48 A -- that version is hardwired. The Emporia is sold in a NEMA 14-50 plug-in version that runs at 40 A.
Do Emporia and Wallbox chargers work with solar?
Both support solar-aware charging with an add-on: a Wallbox Power Meter for the Pulsar Plus, and an Emporia Vue monitor for Emporia's charger.
