This is one of the genuinely useful things a portable charger unlocks, and hardly anyone writes about it. Campgrounds and RV parks are full of exactly the outlets an EV wants, they are everywhere, and a night on a 14-50 hookup fully replaces a long driving day.

The 14-50 row is the one to aim for. It is the same socket used for a home charging circuit, so a portable plugged into an RV pedestal charges exactly as fast as it would in your own garage.

What to carry

  1. A portable Level 2 charger with a NEMA 14-50 plug. The core of the kit.
  2. A TT-30 adapter. This is the one that turns a huge number of ordinary campsites into a charge. Buy it from your charger's manufacturer or one they approve.
  3. Adjustable current on the charger. Site wiring varies enormously in age and quality. Being able to dial down to 16 amps is what lets you use a pedestal you are unsure about.
  4. A 5-15 adapter, as the always-works fallback.

Never chain two adapters together. Each junction is a heat source under a sustained load, and stacking them concentrates the risk where nobody is looking. Adapters, sorted out.

The etiquette, which matters here

  • Book a site with the hookup you need and say you will be charging an EV. Most parks are entirely relaxed about it once asked.
  • Expect to pay. Sites price by hookup amperage for a reason -- you are buying electricity, and a full overnight Level 2 session is real energy.
  • Do not use a pedestal at a site you have not paid for. That is theft, and it is the behavior that gets EVs banned from parks.
  • Turn the current down on unfamiliar wiring, then check the plug is not warm before bed.
  • Route the cable so nobody trips, and coil it in the morning.

Questions people actually ask

Can I charge my EV at a campground?
Often, yes. RV sites commonly have NEMA TT-30 or 14-50 outlets. A 14-50 hookup gives full Level 2 speed, about 34 miles of range per hour. Book the site and expect to pay for the electricity.
What adapter do I need for an RV park?
A NEMA TT-30 adapter covers the common 30-amp pedestal; many sites also offer NEMA 14-50, which most portable chargers plug into directly. Use adapters made or approved by your charger's manufacturer.
How much range does a TT-30 hookup add overnight?
About 10 miles of range per hour, or roughly 100 miles over a ten-hour night.
Is it OK to charge from an RV pedestal without asking?
No. Campgrounds sell electricity by hookup, and using a pedestal you have not paid for is theft. Book the site and say you will be charging.
