Charging at a hotel or Airbnb

The difference between arriving with a charged car and not is usually one sentence in the booking message.

Overnight charging at a hotel or short-term rental is the highest-value charging on any trip: the car is parked for ten hours anyway, and even a slow connection adds real range. The obstacle is almost never technical. It is that nobody asked.

Ask before you book, in one sentence

Something like: *"I drive an electric car -- is there an outdoor outlet near the parking space I could plug into overnight? Happy to pay for the electricity."*

Three things make that work. It is specific, it is low-effort to answer, and it pre-empts the cost objection. Asking before booking also means a no costs you nothing.

The etiquette that gets you invited back

  1. Offer to pay, and mean it. Say what it will cost -- typically a few dollars of electricity for a full overnight session.
  2. Turn the current down. An unfamiliar outlet on unknown wiring deserves 16 amps, not 40. It still adds about 130 miles overnight.
  3. Route the cable so nobody trips on it. Along a wall, not across a path. Under a doormat is not a solution.
  4. Unplug in the morning and coil it properly. Leave the outlet as you found it.
  5. Check the plug is not warm before you go to bed. If it is, unplug and do not use it.
  6. Do not plug in without asking. An outlet on an exterior wall is not an invitation.
