"Charging cable" means two different products, and one of them has a hard safety rule attached. Here is both, sorted out.

People search for "EV charging cable" meaning one of two quite different things, so this page covers both:

  • A portable charger -- the cable with a box in the middle that plugs into an outlet at one end and your car at the other. This is what most people mean.
  • An extension -- extra length between an existing charger and the car. This one comes with a rule.

1. Portable charging cables

A portable Level 2 unit is the same technology as a wall charger with a plug on the end instead of a hardwired connection. Plug it into a NEMA 14-50 and you get up to 40 amps -- the same ceiling as any plug-in wall unit.

What a portable cable delivers

On a NEMA 14-50 at 40 A: 40 x 240 = 9.6 kW, about 34 miles of range per hour

On a NEMA 14-50 at 32 A: 7.7 kW, about 27 miles per hour

On a standard 120 V outlet at 12 A: 1.4 kW, about 5 miles per hour

The outlet decides the speed far more than the cable does.

2. Extensions, done properly

Even so, an extension is the second-best answer. Every additional connection is one more place that can heat up, and the better fix is almost always to move the charger or buy a unit with a longer cable -- how to measure your run.

What about a replacement cable for my wall charger?

On nearly every home charger the cable is not a user-replaceable part -- it is terminated inside the unit. A damaged cable means a warranty claim or a new charger, not a trip to the hardware store. Warranties compared covers what is usually excluded.

What is the best EV charging cable?
For a portable charging cable, the J+ Booster 2 on published specs: 40 A, eight current settings, ETL certified to UL standards and IP67. For extra length on an existing charger, a purpose-built J1772 extension rated for continuous current -- never a household extension cord.
Can I use an extension cord for EV charging?
Not a household extension cord. They are built for intermittent loads, and EV charging draws near-rated current for hours. A purpose-built J1772 extension rated for 40 A continuous is a different product.
How long can an EV charging cable be?
Home chargers ship with roughly 16 to 25 feet. Purpose-built J1772 extensions are sold in 20 and 40 foot lengths, though moving the charger is usually the better fix.
