The best EV chargers for a 40-amp circuit
A 40-amp circuit is one of the most common EV installs, and it is plenty for most drivers -- as long as the charger on it is set to 32 amps.

The biggest charger is rarely the right one. A 40-amp circuit uses thinner wire and a smaller breaker than the 60 amps a 48-amp charger needs, it fits many more panels, and 32 amps of charging covers far more than a typical day's driving overnight.

The code limits a continuous load to 80% of its circuit: 40 x 0.8 = 32 A

Setting the charger
A charger that can draw more than 32 A has to be set to 32 A for this circuit. The ChargePoint Home Flex has a 32 A setting among its six; the Grizzl-E Classic can be set to 16, 24, 32 or 40 A; the J+ Booster 2 portable offers 32 A among its settings, and on a portable you choose it yourself each time you plug in. Label the circuit so the next person knows. How many amps you need.
The receptacle question
NEC Table 210.21(B)(3) permits a 40 or 50 A receptacle on a 40 A circuit, and 40 A receptacles are rare -- so a plug-in install here usually means a NEMA 14-50 on a 40 A breaker. The rule that keeps it safe is the setting: anything plugged into that receptacle must be set to 32 A or less. A receptacle for a charger generally needs ground-fault protection under current code; your electrician fits what your jurisdiction requires. NEMA 14-50 outlets.
