The best EV chargers for a 200-amp panel

On a 200-amp service the question is usually not whether a Level 2 charger fits, but how big a circuit it can have. The load calculation answers that; this page helps you read the answer.

Most advice about panels and chargers is written for the tight 100-amp case. A 200-amp service is a different conversation: there is usually room for Level 2 charging, and the decision is how big a circuit to give it -- and whether a bigger one would actually charge your car any faster.

Service size is not spare capacity

The 200 on your main breaker is what the service can deliver, not what is left over. An all-electric home with a heat pump, an electric range and an electric water heater can already use a large share of it. When the bigger circuit is worth it

  • Your car's onboard charger accepts 11 kW or more. Otherwise a 48 A unit charges no faster than a 40 A one -- check the manual.
  • A big battery. Trucks and large SUVs are the honest case for the top tier. Chargers for an electric truck.
  • Two EVs sharing one charger overnight. Chargers for two EVs.

Can a 200 amp panel handle an EV charger?
Often, yes -- in many homes including a 48 A charger on a 60 A circuit. A load calculation by an electrician is what confirms it for your house.
What size EV charger for a 200 amp panel?
If the load calculation allows a 60 A circuit, a 48 A charger. If it is tighter, a 40 A unit on a 50 A circuit, or an adjustable charger installed at a lower setting.
Do I need a panel upgrade for an EV charger with 200 amp service?
Not usually because of the charger alone, but all-electric homes can use more of a 200 A service than you might expect. The load calculation tells you.
