Every charger below appears in the EPA's own list of certified chargers, not just on the box. Here is what the label means, what it does not, and how to check a model yourself.

A charger spends much of its life plugged into the wall with no car attached, and an efficient one wastes less while it waits and while it works. ENERGY STAR's own estimate: if every EV charger sold in the US met its requirements, energy-cost savings would grow to more than $17 million and 280 million pounds of greenhouse gas emissions would be avoided.

How to check a charger yourself
- Find the exact model number on the listing or the box -- not just the product name.
- Search it in ENERGY STAR's product finder or the certified-charger dataset, both linked at the foot of this page.
- Match the variant. Plug-in and hardwired versions, and different cable lengths, often carry different model numbers.
What the label does not tell you
- Safety. ENERGY STAR covers efficiency. Electrical safety is a separate lab listing -- what the safety marks mean and UL-listed chargers.
- Speed. A certified 40 A unit charges no faster or slower than an uncertified 40 A unit.
- Whether it suits your circuit. That is still how many amps you need.

1. A first charger, hardwired

- Drops to 40 A if you use the NEMA 14-50 plug rather than hardwiring

2. Homes with an uncertain panel

3. Tight wall space

4. Harsh weather and no app
Grizzl-E Classic

A cast-aluminum box with no app, no account and no firmware to update. If you want a charger that behaves like an appliance, this is the one.
What is good
- Cast aluminum NEMA 4 / IP67 enclosure, built for outdoor mounting
- No app, no account, no network dependency
- Amperage is set with physical switches, not software
- Protections for over-current, over-voltage, ground fault and over-temperature
What is not
- 40 A ceiling, slower than the 48 A units if your panel can take more
- No scheduling, so off-peak charging has to be set in the car
- The cold-flexible 24 ft cable is only on the Extreme Edition

5. Long reach outdoors
