This pairing comes straight from what buyers search for. Both are tough, outdoor-rated units with loyal followings; the difference is philosophy. FLO adds features -- scheduling, access control, a NACS option, 50 amps. Grizzl-E removes them, on purpose.

The differences that matter

  • 50 or 40 amps. At 50 A the FLO needs a 70 A circuit; a 40 A Grizzl-E needs 50 A. Many cars cap below 40 A anyway. How many amps you need.
  • Connector. FLO sells the X3 with either connector; the Grizzl-E Classic is J1772. A Tesla uses either through its adapter or the FLO's NACS version.
  • App or no app. FLO's app adds scheduling and the ability to lock the charger -- useful on a driveway. The Grizzl-E has no app, no account and no firmware. Chargers without an app.
  • Plug-in cord length. The FLO's plug-in version has a 24-inch cord, so the receptacle must sit right beside it. The Grizzl-E is plug-in by design.

Grizzl-E Classic

A cast-aluminum box with no app, no account and no firmware to update. If you want a charger that behaves like an appliance, this is the one.

What is good

  • Cast aluminum NEMA 4 / IP67 enclosure, built for outdoor mounting
  • No app, no account, no network dependency
  • Amperage is set with physical switches, not software
  • Protections for over-current, over-voltage, ground fault and over-temperature

What is not

  • 40 A ceiling, slower than the 48 A units if your panel can take more
  • No scheduling, so off-peak charging has to be set in the car
  • The cold-flexible 24 ft cable is only on the Extreme Edition
