A home EV charger draws 32 to 48 amps continuously, for hours, often outdoors, for years. It is the one component in this project where the cheaper option is not a trade-off you can reason about -- and it is the one most often fudged with wording that sounds like certification without being it.

Why this has practical consequences

  1. Inspectors reject unlisted equipment. A new 240-volt circuit almost always needs a permit, and an unlisted charger can fail the inspection -- leaving you with a circuit and no legal charger.
  2. Insurers ask questions if unlisted equipment is implicated in a claim.
  3. Rebate programs require it. Utility and state programs typically demand listed, often Energy Star certified, equipment.
  4. Landlords and HOAs frequently require it in writing.

The enclosure rating is a separate thing

NEMA enclosure ratings and IP codes describe protection against water and dust. They are not safety listings and neither substitutes for the other. A charger needs both: a listing for the electrical design, and an enclosure rating suited to where it will live.

2. Homes with an uncertain panel

3. Tight wall space

4. Harsh weather and no app

  • Protections for over-current, over-voltage, ground fault and over-temperature

What is not

  • 40 A ceiling, slower than the 48 A units if your panel can take more
  • No scheduling, so off-peak charging has to be set in the car
  • The cold-flexible 24 ft cable is only on the Extreme Edition

FAQ

Questions people actually ask

Does an EV charger have to be UL listed?
It should be listed by UL, ETL or CSA. Many inspectors require it for a permitted installation and utility rebate programs typically do too.
Is ETL as good as UL?
Yes. Intertek's ETL mark comes from a Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratory evaluating the product against the same UL standards.
What is the difference between UL listed and UL certified components?
'UL listed' means the finished device was evaluated. 'UL certified components' means some internal parts were, and says nothing about the assembled product.
Which UL standards apply to EV chargers?
UL 2594 for electric vehicle supply equipment and UL 2231 for personnel protection systems. Wallbox, for example, publishes certification to both.
