How this page is funded: we earn a commission if you buy through our Amazon links, at no extra cost to you. It does not change what we recommend, and we say plainly when the honest answer is to buy nothing. Full disclosure.

Most of the charger market has decided you want an app. These two have not. The Grizzl-E Classic has been the no-software choice for years; the Lectron NEXUS is the newer one, and it is the only no-app unit here that reaches the 48-amp tier.

The 8 amps, and what they cost

Hardwired at 48 A, the NEXUS delivers about 11.5 kW against the Grizzl-E's 9.6 kW -- roughly six or seven more miles of range an hour. Getting them means a 60 A circuit and an electrician, because the 48 A version is hardwired.

The circuit each one needs

EV charging is a continuous load, so the circuit is rated at 125% of the charger

48 A x 1.25 = 60 A circuit for the hardwired NEXUS

40 A x 1.25 = 50 A circuit, which is what a NEMA 14-50 sits on

If your panel cannot spare 60 A, the 40 A units are the realistic tier

Cases: IP66 against cast aluminum

The Grizzl-E's cast-aluminum NEMA 4 / IP67 body is the more rugged object -- IP67 covers temporary immersion, which is more than a wall charger should ever meet. The NEXUS uses an IP66 automotive-grade housing, which covers powerful water jets. Both are fit for an exposed wall. Outdoor chargers has the whole field.

What you give up with no app

  • Scheduled charging -- set it in the car instead. Nearly every EV can start charging at a chosen hour.
  • Energy statistics -- a whole-home monitor does this better anyway.
  • Firmware updates -- which is the point. Neither charger can be changed or broken from a server.

1. A long cable, no app

Lectron NEXUS Level 2 charger

Lectron · J1772 · 48 A / 11.5 kW · 23 ft cable

Lectron's wall charger: 48 A hardwired or 40 A on a NEMA 14-50, with a 23 ft cable, an IP66 housing and ETL listing to UL 2594, UL 2231 and UL 2251. Sold with a J1772 or NACS connector -- and with no app at all.

What is good

  • 23 ft of cable, among the longest on this site
  • 48 A hardwired, or 40 A from an existing NEMA 14-50
  • ETL listed to UL 2594, UL 2231 and UL 2251 -- a listing, not a claim of compliance
  • Wall mount, J-hook and plug holder included

What is not

  • No app, Wi-Fi or scheduling on Lectron's NEXUS pages
  • The 48 A version is hardwired only, so it needs an electrician and a 60 A circuit
  • Lectron does not publish an operating temperature range for it

2. Harsh weather and no app

Grizzl-E Classic

Grizzl-E Classic

United Chargers · J1772 · 40 A / 9.6 kW · 24 ft cable

A cast-aluminum box with no app, no account and no firmware to update. If you want a charger that behaves like an appliance, this is the one.

What is good

  • Cast aluminum NEMA 4 / IP67 enclosure, built for outdoor mounting
  • No app, no account, no network dependency
  • Amperage is set with physical switches, not software
  • Protections for over-current, over-voltage, ground fault and over-temperature

What is not

  • 40 A ceiling, slower than the 48 A units if your panel can take more
  • No scheduling, so off-peak charging has to be set in the car
  • The cold-flexible 24 ft cable is only on the Extreme Edition

FAQ

Questions people actually ask

Does the Lectron NEXUS have an app?
No. Lectron's NEXUS pages list no app, Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. That is deliberate, and it is why it sits alongside the Grizzl-E here.
Can the NEXUS be plugged in rather than hardwired?
Yes, Lectron sells a NEMA 14-50 version, which charges at 40 A. The 48 A output is on the hardwired version.
Which has the longer cable?
The Grizzl-E Extreme Edition, at 24 ft against the NEXUS at 23 ft. Both are long for this class.
Can I schedule charging without an app?
Yes, in the car. Every EV we know of can schedule its own charging, which is what makes a no-app charger workable on a time-of-use rate.
