Lectron V-BOX Pro review

A 48-amp J1772 wall unit from the maker of many of the adapters on this site. Its strengths are the app and the choice of plug-in or hardwired; its weakness is a short cable.

Lectron is best known on this site for adapters and portables. The V-BOX Pro is its wall unit: a J1772 charger that can go on a 14-50 now and be hardwired later. We have not tested one; figures come from Lectron's product page, linked at the foot of this page.

Plug-in or hardwired

The two ways to install it

On a NEMA 14-50 (50 A circuit): 40 A x 240 V = 9.6 kW, about 34 miles per hour

Hardwired on a 60 A circuit: 48 A x 240 V = 11.52 kW, about 40 miles per hour

Circuit for 48 A: 48 x 1.25 = 60 A

The same unit covering both is useful if you are renting now or unsure of your panel: plug in today, hardwire later if the load calculation allows. Hardwired vs plug-in.

The cable is the catch

At 16 ft, the V-BOX Pro's cable is the shortest of the wall units on this site; most publish 24 or 25 ft. Measure from the mounting spot to your charge port first, and never add a household extension cord. Cable length guide.

Who should skip it

  • Your charge port is more than about 16 ft from the wall.
  • You want no app at all. Chargers without an app.

Is the Lectron V-BOX Pro any good?
On paper it offers a lot: 48 A hardwired or 40 A plug-in, app control over Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, and an IP65 enclosure. The 16 ft cable is its main limitation.
How long is the Lectron V-BOX Pro's cable?

Can the V-BOX Pro charge a Tesla?
It has a J1772 connector, so a Tesla charges through a J1772-to-NACS adapter, as Lectron notes.
