Portable vs wall-mounted EV charger

A portable charger is not a worse wall charger. It is a different tool, and it is worth it for a specific set of people. Here is how to tell if you are one of them.

The question usually gets asked as "is a portable as good as a wall charger?" -- and on speed the answer is close. The better question is where the charger will spend its life, because that is what actually separates them.

A portable is worth it if

  • You rent. You are not paying to improve someone else's property.
  • You might move within a few years. The charger is an asset, not a fixture.
  • You travel with the car and stay at places with RV or dryer outlets -- the road trip kit.
  • You already have a 240 V outlet in reach of where you park -- have an electrician confirm the circuit first.

A wall unit is the better buy if

  • You own the home and charge in one place. Hardwiring removes the receptacle, the connection most likely to wear.
  • The charger lives outdoors. Buy a unit rated for it -- driveway chargers.
  • You want 48 A for a large battery or two cars.
