If your charger has a 6-50 plug, the receptacle is the one part of the setup worth paying a little more for. Here is what to specify, and what the circuit behind it must be.

A plug-in charger is only as good as the receptacle it plugs into, and the receptacle is the part that sees heat when something is marginal. For a 14-50 that argument has its own page; the same logic applies to the 6-50 -- the 14-50 receptacle picks.

A charger is a continuous load, so its circuit is sized at 125%: 40 x 1.25 = 50 A
50 A is the 6-50's own rating -- the receptacle and circuit match
No neutral: the circuit needs two hots and a ground
Your electrician sizes the breaker and wire, and fits the protection current code requires
