Gift guide
Gifts for an EV owner who already has a charger
Every EV gift guide on the internet is written for somebody in their first month of ownership. If your recipient has had the car for two years, they own all of it already. These six are the layer nobody buys for themselves.
By Sawyer V. · Published November 7, 2026

How this page is funded: we earn a commission if you buy through our Amazon links, at no extra cost to you. It does not change what we recommend, and we say plainly when the honest answer is to buy nothing. Full disclosure.
The verdict, if you read one line: buy the BARKAN 32-inch cable wall arm. An EV owner two years in has solved the charger, the holster and the adapter, and the thing still irritating them every night is twenty-five feet of heavy cable that has to go somewhere. An arm takes it off the floor, keeps most of it inside the mount, brings the connector out to the car at hand height, and comes with a wall holder for a portable charger's control box in the same box. It is the gift in this niche with the best ratio of daily usefulness to how unlikely they are to have bought it.
This page is deliberately the third of a set, and it shares nothing with the other two. Gifts for EV owners is written for a new owner with a J1772 car and leads with a holster; gifts for Tesla owners is the NACS version of the same list. If your recipient is in their first year, read one of those instead -- the basics are better gifts than anything here. Everything below assumes the basics are done.

The six, by budget and by who they suit
| Gift | Budget band | Best for | Who should skip it |
|---|---|---|---|
| A 32-inch cable wall arm | Around $65 | Any garage where the car parks alongside the charger wall | A cable thicker than 0.7 in, or a car that parks across the garage |
| A 20 ft split cable sleeve | Around $80 | A cable that crosses a driveway, gets scuffed or lives outdoors | A cable that never leaves its hook -- it solves abrasion, not storage |
| A lockable charger enclosure | Around $130 | An outdoor charger, a shared driveway, a rental | A charger in a locked private garage |
| An extra-duty 2-gang in-use cover | Under $40 | A plug-in charger on an outdoor NEMA 14-50 | A hardwired charger -- there is no outlet to cover |
| A 63-inch cable wall arm | Around $120 | A car that parks in the far bay or on a driveway | A tight single garage; 63 inches of arm is a lot of intrusion |
| A purpose-built J1772 extension cable | Varies -- sold direct | A charger that does not quite reach where the car parks | Anyone who can just park closer. And never a household extension cord |
Why the cable is the gift
Four of the six picks here are about the cable, and that is not an accident. A home charging cable is 20 to 25 feet of heavy, stiff conductor that gets handled twice a day, every day, for years. In winter it is heavy, stiff and wet. Your winter EV charging kit puts it plainly: a cable left coiled on the ground sits in meltwater, freezes into whatever shape it cooled in, and gets walked on, driven over and caught by a snow shovel.
An owner in their first month solves the connector -- that is the holster, and it is the right first purchase. Almost nobody then solves the cable, because the obvious products for it did not exist in this category until recently and the good ones are still not in the EV aisle. That gap is the whole reason this page exists. The best EV charging cable wall arm and the best cable protector are the long versions of the first two picks.
The one measurement to take before you buy an arm
BARKAN publishes two limits and both are easy to check without ruining a surprise, because you only need to look at the car once. The arms take cables up to 0.7 inches (18 mm) in diameter and up to 11 pounds (5 kg), and BARKAN says it safety-tested at 44 pounds. Wrap a strip of paper around their cable, mark it, measure the strip and divide by 3.14. If it comes out above 0.7 inches, buy the sleeve or the enclosure instead.
The other thing to check is reach. BARKAN sells 32-inch and 63-inch versions of the same arm. Thirty-two inches covers a car parked alongside the charger wall; sixty-three is for a car across a two-car garage or out on a driveway bay. If you are not sure, the shorter one is the safer gift -- it is cheaper and it intrudes less.
Two gifts that depend on one question
Ask whether their charger is hardwired or plugged in. A plug-in charger sits on a NEMA 14-50 receptacle, and if that receptacle is outdoors it needs an extra-duty while-in-use cover -- a 2-gang one, because the cheap 1-gang bubble cover physically cannot fit a 14-50. TayMac's MM2420C is UL listed, extra-duty NEC compliant and NEMA 3R rated, with a lockable tab and the gasket attached. The outdoor outlet in-use cover is the full argument. If their charger is hardwired there is no outlet and this gift is useless, which is why it is worth asking.
The lockable enclosure cuts the other way: it is a better gift for an outdoor or shared setup than for a locked garage. VIVO's box is steel with an outdoor powder-coated finish, a tempered glass front so the status light is still readable, and two side vents so the charger does not cook. The best EV charger pedestals and mounts covers the fitment check -- compare the box's published dimensions against their charger's before you buy.
The six picks
1. A single parking space, charger on the same wall

BARKAN 32 in / 80 cm protective EV charging cable wall arm (EV80WM)
BARKAN · Cable accessory
The cheapest honest answer to a cable on the floor: a zinc-coated arm that lifts the cable above head height, hides most of it inside the arm, and comes with a wall holder for a portable charger's control box. BARKAN publishes the cable diameter it fits, which is the number that decides whether any of this works.
What is good
- Publishes the cable diameter and cable weight it is rated for -- almost nothing in this category does
- Routes most of the cable inside the arm, so it is a conduit rather than just a hook
- Ships with a wall holder for a portable charger's control box, usually a separate purchase
- 5-year warranty, and the coating is specified for rain and sun rather than described as weatherproof
- Adjustable handle doubles as the handle store and the cable coil
What is not
- 0.7 in diameter limit rules out the thickest 48 A cables -- measure yours first
- 11 lb cable limit is a real ceiling on a long heavy cord
- Needs a solid wall or beam; drywall alone is not on BARKAN's list
- A post adapter for metal poles is sold separately
- At 32 inches it is the short one; a car parked wide needs the longer arm
| Maximum distance from the wall | 32 in / 80 cm |
|---|---|
| Fits cable diameter | Up to 0.7 in / 18 mm |
| Cable weight supported | 11 lb / 5 kg; safety tested at 44 lb / 20 kg |
| Recommended installation height | 91 in / 230 cm |
| Mounting surfaces | Block, concrete, wooden beams, or a square wooden post at least 4 in / 10 cm |
| Weather | Indoor and outdoor; zinc coating plus UV additives |
| In the box | Disassembled arm, adjustable handle, strap, a wall holder for the control box, screws and anchors |
| Warranty | 5 years |
| Color | Black |
Skip this if: Skip it if your cable is thicker than 0.7 in or heavier than 11 lb -- BARKAN publishes both limits. Skip this length if the car parks more than a yard out from the wall; the 63-inch arm exists for that.

2. A cable that gets driven over, scraped or shut in a door

DEI EV Charge Cord Protector (10680)
Design Engineering · Cable accessory · 20 ft cable
The only cable protector we found that is sold against a published EV cable diameter: a 20-foot split sleeve for cords 3/4 to 1 inch thick. It protects the cable itself rather than the floor, which is the right way round for a cable that moves every day.
What is good
- Sold against a published cable diameter, which almost nothing in this category is
- Split design wraps a cable that is already installed -- no unplugging, no rewiring
- 20 ft covers the run of a typical 25 ft charging cable where it matters
- Passes two published flammability tests rather than none
- Adds visibility to a black cable on a dark garage floor
What is not
- Protects the cable, not the floor -- it is not a trip-free ramp
- No warranty term published on the page we read
- Adds diameter, so a tight holster or a narrow cord channel may no longer fit
- Does nothing about the cable's weight, which is the other half of the problem
| Length | 20 ft |
|---|---|
| Fits cable diameter | 3/4 in to 1 in |
| Design | Split sleeve -- wraps an installed cable without unplugging it |
| Flammability | Passes UL94 and FMVSS302, per DEI |
| Part number | 10680 |
| UPC | 607078106803 |
| In the box | One cord protector sleeve |
Skip this if: Skip it if your cable never leaves a wall hook -- a sleeve solves abrasion, not storage. Skip it too if what you want is a trip-free surface across a walkway; a sleeve adds bulk rather than a ramp.

3. An outdoor or shared charger you want locked

VIVO Wall-Mounted EV Charger Protective Box (MOUNT-EVCG1)
VIVO · Panel-mounted
A lockable steel enclosure for a wall-mounted charger, with a tempered glass front so you can still read the status light and two side vents so it does not cook. The honest use case is an exposed or shared parking spot.
What is good
- Padlock and key, which is the only published anti-access feature in this category on the site
- Tempered glass front means you can read the charger's status without unlocking it
- Two side vents, so it is not a sealed box around a device that makes heat
- Steel with an outdoor powder-coated finish, mountable to stud or masonry
- 3-year warranty and a published specification table
What is not
- Measure first: a 19.7 x 9.8 x 27.6 in box does not fit every charger, especially 80 A units
- 27.5 lb of enclosure on the wall before the charger goes in it
- VIVO publishes no IP or NEMA rating for the box, so weatherproofing is not a claim we can check
- A padlock deters opportunists; it is not a serious security device
- Pointless in a locked garage
| Product dimensions | 19.7 x 9.8 x 27.6 in |
|---|---|
| Accessory rail | 5.9 x 1.4 in |
| Item weight | 27.5 lb |
| Material | Tempered glass and steel, outdoor powder-coated finish |
| Front panel | Tempered glass, so charging status is readable with the door shut |
| Ventilation | Two side vents |
| Security | Safety padlock and key included |
| Mounting | Wood stud, or concrete and brick |
| Compatibility | Most brands of wall-mounted EV charger |
| Warranty | 3 years |
| SKU | MOUNT-EVCG1 |
Skip this if: Skip it if your charger is in a locked garage -- it is solving access and weather problems you do not have. Check your charger fits the internal dimensions first.

4. A 14-50 you already have

TayMac 2-Gang Extra Duty While-In-Use Cover (MM2420C)
TayMac (Hubbell) · Panel-mounted
The generic version of the same job: a 2-gang, UL-listed, Extra Duty, NEMA 3R while-in-use cover that fits over a NEMA 14-50 receptacle you already own. Cheaper than the Leviton kit, and it is a cover only.
What is good
- Extra Duty and NEMA 3R, which is the grade an outdoor EV receptacle actually needs
- Lockable tab takes a 1/8 in. padlock shackle
- Clear lid, so the plug can be seen seated without opening it
- Attached gasket and mounting hardware included
- Hubbell publishes a full specification table and a UL listing, which the unbranded covers in this category do not
What is not
- Cover only -- the receptacle and the box are separate purchases
- The 55-in-1 adapter set ships pre-configured for a GFCI device, so it has to be reconfigured for a 14-50
- 2.75 in. of depth is the figure to check against your charger's plug and its cable exit
- Vertical mount only in this catalog number
- A padlock tab deters casual tampering; it is not security hardware
| Catalog number | MM2420C |
|---|---|
| Gangs | 2-gang |
| Depth | 2-3/4 in. nominal; 3.07 in. actual, per Hubbell |
| Height x width | 5.7 x 5.43 in |
| Material | High-impact polycarbonate, nonmetallic |
| Enclosure rating | NEMA 3R |
| Compliance | UL Listed; Extra-Duty, NEC compliant, per Hubbell |
| Security | Lockable tab for a 1/8 in. padlock shackle |
| Configuration | 55-in-1 adapter system, pre-configured for GFCI |
| Mounting | Vertical; Quick-Fit keyhole system |
| In the box | Attached gasket and mounting hardware |
| Color | Clear |
Skip this if: Skip it if you have not yet bought the receptacle -- the Leviton kit pairs a matched outlet and cover for not much more. Measure first: 2.75 in. of depth does not swallow every EV plug and cable bend.

5. A car that parks away from the charger wall

BARKAN 63 in / 160 cm protective EV charging cable wall arm (EV160WM2)
BARKAN · Cable accessory
The same arm at nearly twice the reach: 63 inches from the wall, which is what a car parked across a two-car garage or in the far driveway bay actually needs. Same published limits -- 0.7 inch cable, 11 lb.
What is good
- 63 in of reach covers a car in the far bay without stretching the cable
- Same published cable diameter and weight ratings as the short arm
- Cable runs inside the arm, out of the weather and off the floor
- Control-box holder included, so a portable charger stops hanging off its own plug
- 5-year warranty
What is not
- Reaches 63 in into the space when extended -- think about door swings and walkways
- Same 0.7 in cable limit, so a thick 48 A cord still will not fit
- More leverage on the fixings, so the wall matters even more than on the short arm
- Costs noticeably more than the 32 in version for the same hardware
| Maximum distance from the wall | 63 in / 160 cm |
Skip this if: Skip it if 32 inches already reaches; the shorter arm costs less and intrudes less. Skip both if your cable is thicker than 0.7 in.
Specifications above are the manufacturer’s published figures. Source: BARKAN Mounts. We have not tested this unit — see how we pick.
6. Extra reach, done properly
Lectron J1772 extension cable
Lectron · J1772 · 40 A / 9.6 kW · 20 ft cable
A purpose-built 40 A J1772 extension -- silver-plated contacts, temperature monitoring, IP66 -- which is a completely different object from a household extension cord. Sold in 20 ft and 40 ft.
What is good
- Rated for 40 A continuous, which a household extension cord is not
- Silver-plated power and signal contacts with temperature monitoring at the joint
- IP66, so it can sit on a wet driveway
- Two lengths, so you can buy the reach you actually measured
What is not
- Every extra connection is one more place to heat up -- moving the charger is still the better fix
- We could not verify a UL listing from published sources; see the note on the page
- 40 ft of EV cable is heavy and awkward to coil
| Maximum current | 40 A |
|---|---|
| Length | 20 ft (6 m) or 40 ft (12 m) |
| Compatibility | Level 1 and Level 2 J1772 chargers |
| Contacts | Silver-plated, with temperature monitoring |
| Rating | IP66 weatherproof |
| Body | High-strength ABS |
Skip this if: Skip it if you can simply move the charger. Relocating a wall unit a few feet along the wall is usually cheaper and always more robust than adding a connection to the chain.
Specifications above are the manufacturer’s published figures. Source: Lectron. We have not tested this unit — see how we pick.
What not to buy for an owner who is already set up
- A charger. They have one. Which charger somebody needs depends on their panel, their parking and their electrician -- how to choose an EV charger -- and they already made that decision.
- A holster. It is the best gift on both of our other gift pages and it is the first thing an owner buys. Assume it is up.
- A household extension cord. Not at any amperage, not for any distance. The purpose-built J1772 extension on this page is a completely different object, with published contact plating, temperature monitoring and an IP66 rating.
- A charge-port cover, a cable heater or de-icer spray. None of these publish a test, a temperature range or an automaker approval, which is why the winter kit page tells people to skip them.
- Anything that needs an electrician as part of the surprise. A gift that arrives with a quote attached is a chore.
