The best EV chargers for a two-EV household

Two EVs almost never need two circuits. Here is the arithmetic that proves it, and the units to buy when it turns out you do.

The instinct with two electric cars is to assume you need two of everything. Run the numbers first, because the answer is usually cheaper than the instinct.

The arithmetic that decides it

Two cars, one 40-amp charger, one night

Car A drove 40 miles: about 11.4 kWh to replace at 3.5 mi/kWh

Car B drove 35 miles: about 10.0 kWh

Total: 21.4 kWh. At 9.6 kW that is about 2 hours 14 minutes of charging

You are parked for ten hours. Both cars finish before midnight, even taking turns.

The only thing standing between that and reality is whether anyone remembers to move the plug. Most households solve it by alternating nights, which works because neither car arrives empty.

When you genuinely need more

  • Both cars regularly arrive near empty, which usually means long commutes in both.
  • One is a large-battery truck or SUV, so its share of the night is much bigger.
  • A narrow off-peak window that both cars have to fit inside.
  • Nobody will move the cable, which is a real constraint and not worth arguing with.

1. Tesla owners

48 A, a 24 ft cable and a four-year warranty, the longest in this group. The catch is the connector: Gen 3 is NACS, so a J1772 car needs an adapter.

3. Homes with an uncertain panel

The most adjustable unit here. It can be set anywhere from 16 A to 50 A, which makes it the one to buy when you do not yet know what your panel will allow.

If your two cars use different connectors -- one NACS, one J1772 -- read adapters before buying. A J1772 unit plus the adapter that came with the NACS car covers both, and the Tesla Universal Wall Connector handles both natively.
