The best EV chargers for renters

When you do not own the wall, the best charger is one you can unplug and take with you. Here are the ones that make sense, and the conversation to have first.

Renting changes the charger question. You cannot hardwire anything to a wall you do not own, you may move in a year, and the outlet you would use belongs to someone else. What to ask your landlord

  1. Is there a 240 V outlet near where I park -- a 14-50, or a dryer or range outlet in a garage?
  2. Can I charge from it, and how is the electricity paid for?
  3. If there is no outlet, may I have one installed at my cost by a licensed electrician?
  4. Can it stay, or must it be removed when I leave?

Portable or plug-in wall unit

  • Portable (J+ Booster 2, Lectron): lives in the car, works at your place and anywhere else with the right outlet. Best if you move often or park in different places. Best portable chargers.
  • Plug-in wall unit (Grizzl-E Classic): mounts beside a 14-50 or 6-50 and unplugs when you leave. Best if you have a fixed spot and an approved outlet.

What EV charger should a renter buy?
One that leaves with you: a portable Level 2 charger such as the J+ Booster 2 or the Lectron portable, or a plug-in wall unit like the Grizzl-E Classic if you have an approved 240 V outlet.
Can I install an EV charger in a rental?
Only with your landlord's permission, and only by a licensed electrician. A plug-in unit is the practical choice, because it unplugs and leaves with you.
Can I charge my EV from my apartment's dryer outlet?
Only with your landlord's permission and equipment made for it, such as a certified dryer-outlet splitter. Dryer outlet splitters.
