The best dryer outlet splitters for EV charging

If you already have a 240-volt dryer outlet and your panel has no room for a new circuit, a splitter can put Level 2 charging on the outlet you already own.

The expensive part of home charging is usually the new circuit, and on a full panel it can mean a service upgrade. A splitter sidesteps that entirely by reusing a 240-volt outlet you already have -- most often the one behind the dryer.

How a splitter works

It plugs into your existing outlet and gives you two: one for the dryer, one for the charger. The switching is automatic -- NeoCharge, for example, prioritizes the dryer and switches to EV charging when the dryer finishes. An internal breaker keeps the draw inside what the circuit is rated for. Both units here are also sold as able to share an outlet between two EVs.

The 24-amp limit, and what it means

A standard 30 A dryer circuit

The code limits a continuous load to 80% of its circuit: 30 x 0.8 = 24 A

24 A x 240 V = 5.8 kW

At 3.5 mi/kWh, about 20 miles of range per hour

Over a ten-hour night, about 200 miles -- more than most people drive in a day

On a 50 A circuit, such as a range or RV outlet, the same rule allows 40 A -- full plug-in Level 2 speed. The splitter does not create capacity; it just lets two appliances take turns on the circuit you have.

When a splitter is the right answer

  • Your panel has no room for a new circuit, and a service upgrade is the alternative -- panel upgrades.
  • The dryer outlet is near where you park, which is common in garages.
  • Your daily driving fits inside 24 A overnight, even allowing for wash days.

When it is not

  • Your panel can take a dedicated circuit. One less device, and you charge while the dryer runs.
  • You need more than 24 A for a large battery on a 30 A circuit.
  • The dryer outlet is far from the car. Do not bridge the gap with an extension cord -- why.

Can I charge my EV from my dryer outlet?
Yes, with a splitter that switches between the dryer and the charger. On a standard 30 A dryer circuit, charging is limited to 24 A -- about 20 miles of range per hour.
Is a dryer outlet splitter safe for EV charging?
