Setting up home charging for the first time
Nine steps in the right order. Doing them out of order is how people end up with a charger their panel cannot feed.

The single most common mistake in home charging is doing this in the wrong order: buy the charger you liked the look of, then discover your panel cannot feed it, or that its cable does not reach.
Here is the order that avoids that. It costs nothing to follow and it takes about a week, most of which is waiting for quotes.
1. Work out whether you need one
Compare your daily driving with what the included Level 1 cable replaces overnight -- roughly 40 to 60 miles. If Level 1 keeps up, you are done and you have saved $1,500. The honest test.
2. Check your car's connector and AC rate
Look at the charge port: J1772, CCS (which is J1772 for AC), or NACS. Then find the AC charging rate in the owner's manual -- that number caps your charging speed no matter what you buy. Plug types.
3. Open your electrical panel
Read the main breaker rating -- 100, 150 or 200 amps -- and count the adjacent free slots. Photograph it. That photo is the single most useful thing you can send an electrician. Load calculation.
4. Decide where the charger goes, and measure
Park as you normally park. Measure the real cable path from the intended position to your charge port, and add three feet. This sets your minimum cable length and it cannot be fixed later. How to measure.
5. Choose hardwired or plug-in
Hardwired allows up to 48 amps and stays with the house. Plug-in caps at 40 amps and comes with you. If a suitable 240 V outlet already exists, plug-in may remove the electrician entirely. The full trade.
6. Get three quotes
Send each electrician the panel photo, the mounting position, the distance and your target amperage. Ask what conductor size and material they are quoting and whether the permit is included -- otherwise the quotes are not comparable. What to ask.
7. Now buy the charger
Only now, when you know the circuit you are getting. Match the connector, the amperage the electrician confirmed, and the cable length you measured. Check it is properly listed. The picks.

8. Installation and inspection
Be there at commissioning to confirm the amperage is set to match the circuit. Keep the permit and the inspection sign-off with your house records. The process.
9. Set up the habit
- Plug in every night, not when the battery is low.
- Set a charge limit per your manual for daily use, and 100% only before a long trip.
- Schedule off-peak charging if your utility has a time-of-use rate -- in the car if it supports it, otherwise in the charger.
- Hang the connector in its holster pointing down.

1. A first charger, hardwired

2. Homes with an uncertain panel

3. Harsh weather and no app
