Grizzl-E Duo Connect review

Two cables, two cars, one 50-amp circuit. The specification that decides whether this charger suits you is not the 40 amps on the box -- it is the 20 amps each when both cars are plugged in.

A second EV turns a solved problem back into a chore: one cable, two cars, and somebody moving a plug at midnight. The Grizzl-E Duo Connect is United Chargers' answer -- the Connect generation's hardware with two cables hanging off it, so both cars stay plugged in. We have not tested one. Everything below is from the maker's own product record, which is unusually specific about the trade involved.

The number that decides it: 20 amps each

United Chargers does not bury this, and neither will we. The Duo Connect draws 40 A from one circuit, and when two vehicles charge together the maker lists 20 A each. It is one charger with two cables, not two chargers in a box.

What each car gets, both plugged in

20 A x 240 V = 4,800 W = 4.8 kW per car

At 3.5 miles per kWh, that is roughly 17 miles of range an hour, each

Over a 10-hour night: about 48 kWh each, or 165 miles each

One car alone: the full 40 A / 9.6 kW, about 35 miles an hour

Read the third line before dismissing the second. Two cars each taking 48 kWh overnight is far more than most households drive in a day, and the arithmetic only breaks down if both cars arrive nearly empty on the same evening and both have to leave full. How long charging takes covers the general case.

The four ways to charge two EVs

How the Duo Connect compares with the alternatives
ApproachSpeed per carWhat it costs you
One charger, move the cableFull 40 A, one at a timeCheapest. Somebody swaps the plug
Grizzl-E Duo Connect20 A each together, 40 A aloneOne charger, one circuit, no swapping
Two chargers, two circuitsFull speed eachTwo circuits, and usually a panel that can take them
Two power-sharing chargersSplit, managed in softwareTwo units; Tesla links as many as six Wall Connectors
Chargers for two EVs covers the whole field.

The Duo Connect's real rival is the first row, not the third. Most two-EV households already own one charger and move the cable. What you are buying here is the end of that, for a price that is well above a single Classic Connect and well below a second circuit.

Connector pairs, which matter more than they sound

United Chargers sells the Duo Connect with two J1772 cables, two NACS cables, or one of each. The mixed pair is the interesting one: a J1772 car and a Tesla can both plug in natively, with no adapter dangling off either cable. If your household is mid-transition -- one older EV, one NACS car -- that combination is hard to find elsewhere. Plug types covers which is which, and adapters covers the alternative.

Cables, case and weather

  • Two 25 ft cables is the longest pair on this site. Two bays and two charge ports on opposite sides of each car is exactly the case that needs it. Cable length.
  • The enclosure is the familiar Grizzl-E size, 10.25 by 6.25 by 3.75 inches, so it does not need a wall of its own -- though at 26.46 lb with cables, the mounting has to be solid.
  • UL Type 4, rated -30 C to +50 C (-22 F to 122 F), so an outside wall is fair game. Outdoor installation.
  • An indicator light per connector, which matters when two cars are plugged in and only one is charging.

The app

Like the Classic Connect, this is a Grizzl-E with software in it: 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, the Grizzl-E Connect app, schedules, charging statistics and remote control, and United Chargers lists participation in utility demand-response programs. On a time-of-use rate, being able to schedule both cars from one place is worth more here than on a single-car charger. Charging at night.

If you specifically want a Grizzl-E because it has no software, this is the wrong end of the range -- the Classic still has no app at all.

Who should buy it

  • Two EVs that both park at home overnight, on one 50 A circuit.
  • A household with a J1772 car and a NACS car, which the mixed cable pair serves directly.
  • A panel with no room for a second EV circuit, where the alternative is a panel upgrade.
  • Two parking bays that a single 25 ft cable cannot cover.

Who should skip it

  • One-car households. The Classic Connect is the same generation with one cable, for far less.
  • Cars that charge on different nights. If the second EV is a weekend car, one charger and an occasional cable swap costs nothing.
  • Anyone who needs 48 A. The Duo Connect is a 40 A plug-in unit; the 48-amp tier is hardwired.
  • A driver who arrives near-empty every night with a big battery. 20 A each is 4.8 kW, and that is the wrong charger for that pattern.

1. Two EVs on one circuit

Grizzl-E Duo Connect

Grizzl-E Duo Connect

United Chargers · J1772 · 40 A / 9.6 kW · 25 ft cable

Two 25 ft cables on one 40 A plug-in charger, so two EVs can be plugged in at once. The honest catch is in the maker's own spec: 40 A total, and 20 A each when both cars charge together.

What is good

  • Two cars can stay plugged in on one 50 A circuit, with no swapping cables at midnight
  • Two 25 ft cables, the longest on this site, so both bays are reachable
  • Connector pairs to suit a mixed household: J1772/J1772, J1772/NACS or NACS/NACS
  • UL/cUL listed with a published file number, and a UL Type 4 indoor/outdoor rating
  • Wi-Fi scheduling and statistics in the Grizzl-E Connect app, with an indicator light per connector

What is not

  • 40 A is the total, not per car: United Chargers lists 20 A each when two vehicles charge at once
  • Plug-in only at 40 A, so there is no 48 A hardwired version
  • Costs far more than one Classic Connect, which gives a single car the full 40 A
  • Two-car households that charge at different times gain nothing over a single charger
  • 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi only, like the rest of the Connect range

Skip this if: Skip it if only one car charges at a time, or if either car needs the full 40 A overnight. One Classic Connect costs far less and gives that car everything the circuit has.

Alternatives worth pricing

Before buying, get two other quotes: a Classic Connect plus the cost of living with one cable, and a second dedicated circuit for a second charger. If your panel has room, two ordinary chargers on two circuits give both cars full speed and cost less than people expect -- load calculation tells you whether that is even on the table.

FAQ

Questions people actually ask

Can the Grizzl-E Duo Connect charge two cars at once?
Yes, that is its purpose. United Chargers lists 40 A total and 20 A each when two vehicles are charging, which is about 4.8 kW per car.
How fast does one car charge on the Duo Connect?
With only one car plugged in, the full 40 A / 9.6 kW, or roughly 35 miles of range an hour for a typical EV.
What circuit does it need?
A NEMA 14-50 receptacle on a 50 A circuit -- the same circuit a single 40 A charger uses. The installation manual governs.
Can it charge a Tesla and a J1772 car together?
Yes. United Chargers sells it with two J1772 cables, two NACS cables, or one of each, so a mixed household can plug both in natively.
Is it hardwired?
No. It is a 40 A plug-in unit with a NEMA 14-50 plug.
