The best long-cable EV chargers

Nearly every complaint about a home charger that is not about installation cost is about reach. The port is on the wrong side of the car, the car parks nose-in one week and backed-in the next, or the second car needs the same charger. Cable length is the only specification on the box that fixes all three, and it is the one buyers guess at.

How to measure before you buy

1. 1.Park the car where it actually lives. Not where it would be convenient.
2. 2.Run a string from the proposed charger position to the charge port, following the path the cable would take -- around the mirror, over the hood, not through the car.
3. 3.Add the drop. The charger mounts at chest height, so the cable falls before it travels. That is often 3 to 4 ft on its own.
4. 4.Add a margin for the other car, or for the day you park the other way around.
5. 5.Compare the total against the specification. If it is within a couple of feet, go longer.

How these are ranked

All six reach further than the class average, so length alone does not separate them. The order below is cable first, then what the charger asks of your house: a plug-in unit you can install without rewiring ranks above one that needs an electrician and a 60 A circuit, all else equal.

1. Grizzl-E Classic Connect -- 25 ft, and it plugs in

The longest cable in the group on a unit that plugs into a NEMA 14-50, with a UL Type 4 rating and a -22 F to 122 F range. It is a 40 A charger, so it will not match the 48 A units on speed, but it is the easiest of these to actually get installed. Full review.

2. Autel MaxiCharger AC Home -- 25 ft, plug or hardwired

The same 25 ft with more installation options: NEMA 14-50, NEMA 6-50 or hardwired, and a NEMA Type 4 case. Hardwired it reaches 50 A, which needs a bigger circuit than the 48 A units. Full review.

3. Wallbox Pulsar Plus -- 25 ft from the smallest body

The useful trick here is that the long cable comes out of a 7.8 by 7.9 inch box, so it suits a narrow wall beside a door. Hardwired only at 48 A, and rated to 104 F rather than the 122 F some rivals publish. Full review.

4. Emporia Pro -- 25 ft with load management

Worth its place if your panel is the obstacle: PowerSmart load management is standard and the Vue 3 monitor is in the box. If your panel is fine, the Classic below costs less for the same 48 A. Pro against Classic.

5. Emporia Classic -- 24 ft, the safe default

A foot shorter, and the unit most first-time buyers should look at first: 48 A hardwired, NEMA Type 4, ENERGY STAR certified, energy monitoring with no subscription. Full review.

6. Lectron NEXUS -- 23 ft with no app at all

The long-cable choice for people who want no software: 23 ft, IP66, ETL listed to UL 2594, UL 2231 and UL 2251, and no Wi-Fi anywhere in it. Full review.

What a long cable costs you

• Weight. A 25 ft EV cable is heavy, and it gets heavier in your hand at the end of a cold day.
• Stiffness. Cheap cable goes rigid below freezing. Cold-weather chargers covers which cables stay flexible.
• Storage. Coiled on the floor, a long cable gets driven over. A holster or J-hook is not optional at this length.
• Price. Longer cable generally costs more, all else equal. Live prices are shown on each pick above.

None of that outweighs being able to reach the port. A charger that cannot reach is not a cheaper charger, it is a charger you will replace.

2. Long reach outdoors

The 25 ft cable is the longest in this group, and the NEMA 4 case plus a cold-flexible cord make it the easiest unit to live with on an exposed outside wall.

Emporia's 48-amp charger with PowerSmart load management built in: the Vue 3 energy monitor comes in the box, and the charger backs off when the rest of the house is busy. The one to look at when your panel is the obstacle.

What is good

• +Emporia says it works even with older 60 or 100 amp services

What is not

• −PowerSmart needs the Vue installed in your panel -- electrician work
