Emporia vs Emporia Pro
Same brand, same 48 amps, same cable class. The Pro exists for one problem, and if you do not have that problem you are buying nothing.

This is the clearest upgrade question on the site, because the two chargers are the same speed. The Emporia Classic and the Emporia Pro both deliver 48 A hardwired and 40 A on a plug. What the Pro adds is PowerSmart, Emporia's load management, and the Vue 3 monitor that makes it work.

What load management actually does
A standard EV circuit has to be sized as though the charger will run flat out while the dryer, the oven and the air conditioning are all running. In a house with a small service, that calculation is what forces a panel upgrade -- often the most expensive part of the whole project.
Load management changes the arithmetic. The Vue 3 watches the whole house at the panel, and the charger reduces its current when the rest of the house needs it. Emporia says PowerSmart lets the Pro work even on older 60 or 100 amp services. Load management explained covers the concept, and panel upgrades covers what you are trying to avoid.
Where the money goes
A panel upgrade is usually the single largest line on an EV charger quote
A load-managed charger can let an existing service carry the charger
That is the only saving the Pro offers -- it charges at the same 48 A
No panel problem means no saving, and the Classic is the cheaper unit
The other differences
- Connector: the Pro is sold with J1772 or NACS. The Classic is J1772 only.
- Cable: 25 ft on the Pro against 24 ft on the Classic. Not a deciding foot.
- Rear entry: the Pro offers a rear-entry conduit option, which looks tidier on a finished wall.
- Energy data: the Classic reports its own charging; the Vue 3 in the Pro box reports the whole house.

1. A first charger, hardwired

The safe default for a first home charger: 48 amps hardwired, a genuinely long cable, a NEMA 4 outdoor-rated case, and no subscription attached to the app.

- 48 A hardwired is the fastest tier most homes can realistically support
- 24 ft of cable reaches across a two-car garage without a fight
- NEMA Type 4 enclosure is rated for outdoor mounting
- Energy monitoring in the app with no subscription

- Drops to 40 A if you use the NEMA 14-50 plug rather than hardwiring
- The app is the only way to change the amperage setting

2. A tight panel

Emporia's 48-amp charger with PowerSmart load management built in: the Vue 3 energy monitor comes in the box, and the charger backs off when the rest of the house is busy. The one to look at when your panel is the obstacle.

Skip this if: Skip it if your panel has comfortable room for a full EV circuit. Without that problem you are paying for load management you will not use -- the Emporia Classic charges at the same 48 A.
