Grizzl-E Classic vs Classic Connect

United Chargers now sells two versions of the same idea, and the names do not help: the Grizzl-E Classic and the Grizzl-E Classic Connect. They charge at the same speed, plug into the same outlet, and carry the same three-year warranty. The Connect adds connectivity, which is exactly what buyers of the original went looking for a charger to avoid.

Side by side

Speed: there is no difference

Forty amps is forty amps. On a 50-amp circuit, both units deliver up to 9.6 kW, which is roughly 30 to 35 miles of range an hour for a typical EV. Neither has a 48 A version, so if your panel can support a 48 A charger and you want that speed, neither Grizzl-E is the answer.

The app is the real question

The Classic was bought by people who wanted an appliance: no account, no firmware, nothing to stop working when a server is retired. The Connect adds 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi and the Grizzl-E Connect app, which brings scheduled charging and charging statistics.

That matters most if your utility charges less at night. Without an app, off-peak charging has to be scheduled in the car, which nearly every EV can do. Charging at night covers both routes.

Cable, case and connector

• Cable: 25 ft on the Connect, 24 ft on the Classic Extreme Edition. One foot rarely decides a purchase, but both are long. How much cable you need.
• Case: the Classic's cast-aluminum NEMA 4 / IP67 body is the toughest thing in this class. The Connect carries a UL Type 4 rating, rated from -22 F to 122 F.
• Connector: the Connect is sold with a J1772 or a NACS cable. The Classic is J1772, so a NACS car needs an adapter.

Both units

Same maker, same 40 A, same three-year warranty. The app is the difference.

1. Grizzl-E toughness, with an app

What is not

• −40 A ceiling, with no hardwired 48 A version
• −Sold with a NEMA 14-50 plug; the Classic's 6-50 option is not among the Connect listings we found
• −The app needs 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi where the charger is mounted

Skip this if: Skip it if you wanted a Grizzl-E precisely because it has no app -- the original Classic is still the no-software choice -- or if you want 48 A. The Classic Connect is a 40 A plug-in unit.

2. Harsh weather and no app

Grizzl-E Classic

A cast-aluminum box with no app, no account and no firmware to update. If you want a charger that behaves like an appliance, this is the one.

What is good

• +Cast aluminum NEMA 4 / IP67 enclosure, built for outdoor mounting
• +No app, no account, no network dependency
• +Amperage is set with physical switches, not software
• +Protections for over-current, over-voltage, ground fault and over-temperature

What is not

• −40 A ceiling, slower than the 48 A units if your panel can take more
• −No scheduling, so off-peak charging has to be set in the car
• −The cold-flexible 24 ft cable is only on the Extreme Edition
