Grizzl-E Mini Connect vs Classic Connect

Identical output, identical cable, identical app. The Mini costs more and does something the Classic cannot: it comes off the wall and goes with you.

The verdict: for a charger that will be screwed to one wall and left there, the Classic Connect is the better buy -- you are getting the same charging performance and the same software for less money. The Mini Connect is worth its premium only if the charger genuinely needs to move, in which case it is unusual and good: a full wall-charger specification in a case, rather than the thin travel cordset most portables are.

Speed: identical, and here is the proof

Both units

40 A x 240 V = 9,600 W, which is 9.6 kW. United Chargers rounds the Mini's figure to 10 kW.

The breaker is 125% of a continuous load, so both need a 50 A circuit.

At 30 kWh per 100 miles, 9.6 / 30 x 100 = about 32 miles of range per hour.

Over a ten-hour night that is about 320 miles, from either charger.

So this comparison is entirely about form factor, adapters and price. If anyone tells you the wall unit charges faster because it is bolted down, the arithmetic above is the answer.

What the Mini buys you

  • Four outlet adapters. One charger covers several 240 V outlet types, which is what makes it usable at a relative's house, a rental or a campground. Outlet types for travel charging is the field guide.
  • A 7-amp floor. Dialling right down is how you charge from a circuit you do not own without tripping it. The Classic stops at 16 A.
  • A carrying case and a cradle, so it works as a wall charger at home and still goes in the trunk.
  • A metal case with the same Type 4 rating as the wall unit, which is not true of most portable chargers.

If the app is the part you are unsure about, the sibling comparison is Grizzl-E Classic vs Classic Connect -- the same charger with and without Wi-Fi. And if you are weighing a portable against a wall unit in general rather than these two specifically, portable vs wall charger is the broader version.

1. Grizzl-E toughness, with an app

Grizzl-E Classic Connect

Grizzl-E Classic Connect

United Chargers · J1772 · 40 A / 9.6 kW · 25 ft cable

The next-generation Grizzl-E: 40 A on a NEMA 14-50, a 25 ft cable, a UL Type 4 indoor/outdoor rating -- and, unlike the Classic, Wi-Fi and the Grizzl-E Connect app. Sold with a J1772 or NACS cable.

What is good

  • 25 ft cable, a foot longer than the Classic Extreme Edition's
  • Wi-Fi app with schedules and charging statistics, which the Classic deliberately lacks
  • UL/cUL listed, with a published file number
  • Rated to run from -22 F to 122 F

What is not

  • 40 A ceiling, with no hardwired 48 A version
  • Sold with a NEMA 14-50 plug; the Classic's 6-50 option is not among the Connect listings we found
  • The app needs 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi where the charger is mounted

Skip this if: Skip it if you wanted a Grizzl-E precisely because it has no app -- the original Classic is still the no-software choice -- or if you want 48 A. The Classic Connect is a 40 A plug-in unit.

2. A portable that replaces a wall unit

Grizzl-E Mini Connect

Grizzl-E Mini Connect

United Chargers · NACS · 40 A / 9.6 kW · 25 ft cable

A portable 40 A charger in a metal case, with four adapters, a 25 ft cable and the Grizzl-E Connect app. It does the job of a wall charger and fits in a carrying case.

What is good

  • A 25 ft cable, which is wall-charger length on a portable unit
  • Four adapters in the box, so one charger covers several outlet types
  • Adjustable down to 7 A, lower than most chargers go
  • Metal case with a Type 4 indoor/outdoor rating, and a -22 F to 122 F range
  • Wi-Fi scheduling and statistics through the Grizzl-E Connect app

What is not

  • Priced like a wall charger, not like a spare cable for the trunk
  • 40 A is the ceiling, so it cannot match a 48 A hardwired unit
  • The live Amazon listing is the NACS version; the J1772 version is sold by the maker
  • Heavier than a basic travel cordset at close to 20 lb shipped
  • 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi only, like the rest of the Connect range

FAQ

Questions people actually ask

Is the Grizzl-E Mini Connect slower than the Classic Connect?
No. Both charge at 40 A, which is 9.6 kW at 240 V, on a 50 A circuit, through a 25 ft cable. United Chargers lists the Mini as 10 kW, which is the same figure rounded.
What is the difference between the Grizzl-E Mini and the Classic?
Form factor and accessories. The Mini is a portable in a metal case with four outlet adapters, a carrying case and a 7 A minimum; the Classic Connect is a wall unit with a 16 A minimum. Output, cable length, app and temperature rating are the same.
Can the Grizzl-E Mini Connect be used as a permanent wall charger?
Yes. It ships with a mounting cradle and carries the same Type 4 indoor/outdoor rating as the wall unit, so it can live on a wall and still come off when you need it to.
Which Grizzl-E should a renter buy?
The Mini Connect. It plugs in, comes off the wall, dials down to 7 A for circuits you do not control, and includes adapters for several outlet types.
