NeoCharge Smart Splitter review

Share the 240-volt outlet you already have between an appliance and your EV, with the switching done for you. Here is what NeoCharge publishes, and the catches.

The Smart Splitter is for the house with a 240-volt outlet in the right place and no room in the panel for a new circuit. We have not tested one; this review uses NeoCharge's product page, linked at the foot of this page.

How it works

It plugs into your existing outlet and gives you two sockets: one for the dryer or range, one for the EV charger. It switches power between them automatically, so the two loads take turns instead of overloading the circuit. NeoCharge also offers it for two EVs sharing one outlet.

The 24-amp limit

What a 30 A dryer circuit allows

Continuous limit: 30 x 0.8 = 24 A

24 A x 240 V = 5,760 W, about 5.8 kW

At 3.5 mi/kWh: about 20 miles of range per hour

On a 50 A outlet with the 40 A version: 9.6 kW, about 34 miles per hour

The 80% rule is the same one Splitvolt's FAQ spells out for its splitters: 24 A on a 30 A dryer circuit, 40 A on a 50 A circuit. Set your charger to match, so the charger -- not the splitter's breaker -- is doing the limiting. Chargers for a 30-amp circuit.

Who should buy it

  • No room for a new circuit, and a dryer or range outlet where you park. Panel upgrades.
  • Renters with the landlord's permission to use an existing outlet. Chargers for renters.

Who should skip it

  • Your panel can take a new circuit. A dedicated EV circuit charges while the dryer runs, with one less device in the chain.
  • The outlet is outdoors or damp. NeoCharge lists the splitter for indoor use only.
  • You need more than 24 A from a 30 A outlet. No splitter changes that limit.
