Emporia Pro EV charger review

Emporia's answer to the panel problem: its familiar 48-amp charger, with an energy monitor in the box and load management switched on. Here is what that gets you on paper.

Emporia estimates that about half of US homes would need a panel upgrade to install a Level 2 charger in the usual way. The Pro is its answer: rather than asking the panel for a fixed 60 amps, it watches the whole house and takes what is spare. We have not tested one; this review is built from Emporia's published pages, linked at the foot of this page.

What PowerSmart actually does

Emporia describes PowerSmart as reading real-time power from the Vue monitor installed in your panel and adjusting the charger's output so the whole home stays under its service limit. When the house is busy, charging slows; when it is quiet, charging runs at full rate. The Pro also includes Emporia's excess-solar and peak-demand features. Load management explained.

Who should skip it

  • Your panel has room for a full-size EV circuit. The same 48 A is available without the monitor.
  • You want the smallest possible install. The Vue adds sensors inside your panel.
  • You would rather not rely on an app for how the charger behaves. Chargers without an app.

Skip this if: Skip it if your panel has comfortable room for a full EV circuit. Without that problem you are paying for load management you will not use -- the Emporia Classic charges at the same 48 A.

Is the Emporia Pro worth it?
If your panel cannot carry a full EV circuit, often yes: PowerSmart and the included Vue 3 can be the alternative to a service upgrade. If your panel has room, the same 48 A is available without them.
What is the difference between the Emporia Pro and Classic?
Emporia says both deliver up to 48 A hardwired with a 25 ft cable and a three-year warranty. The Pro adds PowerSmart load management and includes the Vue 3 energy monitor in the box.
Does the Emporia Pro need Wi-Fi?
Its load management and energy features run through Emporia's app and the Vue monitor; plan on a connection where the charger and panel are.
